THR: The Forecast Changes Overnight.

Welcome to my Blog, bringing you my weather observations through North East Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, North Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and into the City of York during my daily commute from Melton Mowbray, by car and train.

Thursday 17th January 2008:

The Forecast Changes Overnight.

Last night the local TV weather forecast predicted a band of "moderate to heavy" rain to be falling by the morning in Melton Mowbray; never trust a TV forecast!

This morning in Melton it was dry and quite mild with a gentle breeze. It was though cloudy throughout the drive to Grantham.

Once on the train the journey north took me into a band of precipitation, which started off as light drizzle through Nottinghamshire trying to become something heavier north of Doncaster and then fizzling out again in York.

It is now very obvious just how saturated the ground is. From the train window fields are sodden and every small brook and stream is full of brown fast moving water.

A summary of the rivers I cross on the train.

  • The River Idle has flooded its flood plain through Bawtry with the land to the east of the railway underwater.
  • A beck near the village of Arksey is that high the trains appear to be reduced in speed before crossing the bridge.
  • The River Aire has flooded its flood plain near Templehirst, but unlike yesterday is no longer overtopping its bank.
  • The River Wharfe appears to be much higher through Ryther with a large part of the flood plain now underwater.

Tomorrow; Will today's rain increase the flood problems?
