About This Group

A new place for those in Yorkshire and the East of England to chat about the weather and their daily lives.
  1. What's new in this group
  2. We had a hail shower about 8.15 as i was driving to work, short and sharp, snow/sleet showers up at cropton forest first thing according to reports, it really needs to warm up, log burner lit again tonight with it being 2°c outside currently.
  3. mike57 Yes, that's what I heard. We had a hail storm on the moors at 9am and it then stayed dry but bitterly cold until 3pm when it unexpectedly rained really hard. The sun came out later and it has actually been a nice evening, with the cold wind dropping right off on the NY coast. Alas, it seems we may be getting showers from a feature from the North Sea early tomorrow which may stick around until late morning. I do not normally say it, but I am actually glad that I shall be heading back to Cheshire later tomorrow.
  4. mike57 Would not be at all surprising there has been snow over the NYM this morning It is absolutely baltic here in Sheffield it feels more like December here then April it is absolutely vile.
  5. A Face like Thunder Yes today has started with showers, which even had a few wintery bits in earlier according to Mrs Mike57. 5C, and a strong northerly wind this morning. I dont mind cold but this wind and wet just seems never ending this winter. Stove is lit and will be burning most of the day again.
  6. A bit to my surprise, the sun came out at times during the afternoon, although still interspersed with mainly light showers. The main issue was the beastly wind on the coast which pegged temperatures drastically, with the East Yorkshire coast not getting above 5C today (BBC radio weather forecast). More of the same tomorrow it seems.
  7. The good news is that it's finally stopped raining (for the moment) and started brightening up a bit, the bad news is that there's now a howling and cold N / NE wind on the coast.
  8. And still it is raining! and the wind up again. The spinning on a coin is what is driving me mad, there’s no possibility of consistency in temperature. No one expects consistency in weather. Rain, sun, wind from one day to another in this country is a given, but is it too much to expect at this time of year some levelling out of temperature? Yes, May next week! Am resorting to reading the model threads to see when the jet stream might feel like shifting….am I losing my sanity?
  9. Looked at the radar this morn and it looked like it would clear by lunch but NO, its kept on drizzling/raining all afternoon and through this evening, log burner lit again and its a week away from May, really starting to 'grind my gears' now....
  10. What a miserable day on the NY moors. Despite the forecast of rain heading away south late morning, it continued to rain for most of the day and non-too warm either. Still raining on and off until recently. Can we hope for a drier day tomorrow? I certainly hope so. Edit - one thing that has not been a problem today is the wind, but it seems to be blowing up a bit now, which will not be a bad thing if it blows the main area of rain away..
  11. RebsAbbo Yes the noise from overloaded clogged mowers was evident in our village yesterday afternoon. I should have cut ours yesterday, but also had loads of other jobs to do. Needless to say we are back to the same old wet today. Still raining at lunchtime but appears to have stopped now. Cold at 7c. Cycling is off until Thursday due to bike needing repairs, a walk at lunchtime resulted in me getting wet.
  12. Hmmm, missed opportunity for getting in the garden yesterday but hey ho! Grey and light rain so far this morning…hopefully it’ll clear by this aft. @Wold Topperthink you should have underlined your word ‘again’ . However, impressive stack & presumably overflow? Thought you had a covered store? Keep up the good work!
  13. Back on the NY moors and coast until Thursday. A pleasant enough afternoon, a bit of sunshine, cool despite the lack of wind, but dry which was welcome. Not sure it's going to last that way with rain forecast for tomorrow to move down from the North. Not sure how much we shall see near the coast, hopefully not a lot!
  14. RebsAbbo de-stoning and ridging for spuds i see , twas a pleasant day on the Wolds today, i took advantage and spent the splitting logs, again....
  15. Finally the bite in that wind has eased, a thoroughly pleasant spring day on the wolds. Not a lot of warmth to the sun yet but the absence of wind is enough for now….and finally the planting has begun in earnest this year
  16. Not sure where that gale last night came from. Around 10pm really blowing hard, according to MetO max gust in Bridlington was 38mph, I would estimate 50mph + here. Not too bad this morning, some showers about but also some sun, but cold and still windy.
  17. A light frost again this morning Temp got down to 1.5C.Mrs Ponti was prepaired for it .Plants were under cover early. A Meteor 2.3 scan from 10.45 pass.
  18. Seen a good few cumulonimbi today, nice whispy capillatus tops and a couple anvils. Also had some graupel/small hail, one at home one at college. Unfortunately there's some stratiform clouds building, was hoping to catch some aurora one or two people did last night in these parts. Max temp 11.1c
  19. A better today today, wind is not as strong, but still a nagging NW force 4-6, maybe a bit more on the exposed bits. Cold at 8c. Managed to complete bike ride, had a very light shower of what looked like graupel while out (white hard cold bits...). Some breaks in the clouds with sunny intervals.
  20. Bill Bailey the lightning over Penistone, yes I saw that, I think it must have been the national weather forecast at 10.30pm on BBC1
  21. Grass frost and a beautifully sunny start here this morning. At 8pm last night we had an impressive hailstorm that came over from the Holmfirth/Penistone direction. The late Look North weather bulletin had great image of that skyline. Some on weather watchers too.
