These cheerful little flowers are tough as nails and are the garden version of plants which can be found alongside Alpine glaciers (where they flower when briefly uncovered by snow in August)

Not sure of the variety but it's an old one - the plant was already here in large clumps when we moved here in 1970.

Google image search shows many variations, from white through pink and red, to quite purple kinds.
