Lower Farndale

4wd

This stone track is still a fully legal Highway; at one time it was the main route if you wanted to go North over the moors.

Over time the tracks became increasingly difficult to negotiate so people just started a new one alongside.

Eventually you had a difficult decision to make at the bottom of the hill - and once committed the tracks are deeply incised so you would not have been able to turn with a heavy cart and team of horses.

The modern road on Blakey Ridge is further to the east but is still demands respect in foggy or snowy conditions. It is notorious for drifting snow and will often be closed for days at a time.
