So annoyed I missed the train going underneath by less than five minutes!
Newtondale is an interesting ice age feature.
What is now the North Sea was full of ice.
To the north what is now Eskdale - draining to the east coast - became a large lake which eventually found an outlet south towards Pickering.
It's thought this was a very dramatic event and most of this deep, steep sided valley was gouged out in a matter of days.
It formed a useful low level north/south route for the railway builders, but they had serious issues with boggy ground.
Some sections are supposedly laid on brushwood over hundreds of rolled up sheep fleeces.
