Dzibilchaltun Cenote

The Cenote at Dzibilchaltun, a Mayan site, near Merida, Yucatan, pictured in late January 2005.

The Cenotes are small hollows in the limestone of the otherwise flat pennisula of north Yucatan, Mexico which form a concentric pattern. They were created by the meteorite which caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs at the end of the Cetaceous Period, centred in Chixulub. Crystal clear they are fabulous for swimming.
