Major Hurricane Ian.
in the vale replied to matty40s's topic in Hurricanes, Cyclones and Extreme weather worldwide
The Sheriff of Lee County (includes Fort Myers, and Sanibel & Captiva islands) was interviewed on ABC news about an hour ago. He said fatalities in the area are understood to be in the hundreds. I so hope this is incorrect. -
Major Hurricane Ian.

Difference between high and low tides there is very small (around 3ft if I remember right) and the surge was forecast to be 12 - 18ft. so doesn't seem to make a difference where the tide is at. Highest point on Captiva is 16ft ASL. -

I think (according to my search) the last webcam on Sanibel Island has just gone. I was seeing the incroaching sea water, at a big road junction (big for Sanibel), rising at around an inch every couple of mins. If you haven't been, Captiva and Sanibel are very low-lying gulf coast islands. Stoms like this can change geography. I'm not sure places like these will still be habitable once this passes. Very sad. -

Just watching the last webcam I can find operating on those islands (Sanibel) and it looks terrifying. -

This is a potentially dreadful event for Gulf coast areas. I spent a wonderful holiday on Captiva Island a few years ago and some of the scenarios seem to suggest it will be completely overwhelmed by the surge. -

Now that the centre of the main low is directly overhead, looks like we've bottomed out at 975.3mb. The back end of this is when I expect winds here to start really picking up. The area SE of the main low won't see the main impact for a while yet, but it will come. Some folk on here either don't look at the charts or don't understand the basics. -

I think it was quite soon after that my parents bought a trailer tent and our European trips started too. There's probably loads of people with a similar story to tell - it was quite traumatic! Hasn't cured my camping bug though..... -

We were camping there in '79 when the Fastnet storm hit, which was interesting. Bricks and mortar these days but I'll be watching the Harbour webcam closely on Friday. Going on Sat instead so hoping it's all still there! -

Davis Vantage Pro 2 - Confused about the options
in the vale replied to Terrierist's topic in Weather stations and equipment
Right next to the graveyard (hence 'Dead Centre') of an ancient church bang in the middle of the Vale, a place called Llanynys. If you follow the Wundrground link below you'll see it on the map. I am used to historic rallies going through here so you probably know it. Big rally fan myself, have owned Imprezas of various sorts continuously since my first in 95. -
Davis Vantage Pro 2 - Confused about the options
in the vale replied to Terrierist's topic in Weather stations and equipment
I have had the Pro 2 with data logger for a number of years. Generally very reliable and easy to set up. The £180 (cheaper if bought with the console) data logger fits inside the Pro 2 console battery compartment and links via a cable to one of your PC USB ports. I think this is essential, but you may not. On my PC I use Weather Display to show the data and this software has an easy Wunderground set up built in. Wunderground is what I use to post data to the internet and there are several iPhone apps that you can use to display your latest Wunderground data. My station is set to download data to my PC every 3 seconds and I have also set that frequency for upload to Wunderground via internet. Just ask if you have more questions - happy to help where I can. -

I'm just relieved it was the cable and not the anemometer! -

Fixed - it was the repair. A few wiggles and it's working again. -
Easy analysis of Weather Display data logs?

For WD users this is now incorporated into the latest production release. 'View' - 'Last Time It Was Almanac'. Great stuff! -
VP2 - wind direction issue
in the vale replied to in the vale's topic in Weather stations and equipment
Thanks for this link. I think I bought it early 2014 and it looks like I have the latest anemometer. Mine worked fine and then suddenly indicated North and stayed there - no flicking. I have since remembered that I did have to repair the cable a couple of years ago after I accidentally chopped it whilst clearing a vine from the house wall so I'll start there. It's also possible I nudged the terminal at the sensor suite end when I replaced my hygro/thermo sensor a month or so ago. Failing those ideas I'll have to buy a new anemometer and get the big ladders out..... -
OK - latest VP2 problem. Despite seeing my direction vane moving around, I have been recording due North constantly for 24 hours. Wind speed seems fine. Anyone else had this problem?

Easy analysis of Weather Display data logs?

Brian Hamilton has created a new icon on a beta version of WD that covers my queries - works great! Hope to see it in a future live release. Great result and super-responsive. -

Easy analysis of Weather Display data logs?

Update: I asked this question on the Weather Display user forum and a couple of people have created their own database & SQL queries to answer these sorts of questions. Then Brian Hamilton, the smart guy who created / maintains WD in New Zealand, popped in and suggested it would be a good feature to add to WD. Happy Days! I'll keep you posted.
