  1. I'm sure that, should we we manage to go for maybe four weeks without rain in the coming months, the trashy media will be screaming 'drought!' and the hosepipe bans will commence, primarily in the south east at first ....... That's because despite all this rain the UK lacks enough reservoirs as well as a reliable, well maintained water distribution network. This is because the UK no longer owns most of its water distribution network, a lot has been taken over by foreign investors and other interested groups.
  2. While I too am absolutely hating the almost endless wet and miserable weather I wouldn't be at all surprised if in the next few months we enter a prolonged dry spell which will inevitably lead to hosepipe bans and people desiring more rain. Of course given our climate we shouldn't have to endure water supply issues but due to the way that our water system is being run by foreign owners this shouldn't be a surprise (about 70% of the English water industry is under foreign ownership, private equity, businesses in tax havens, pension funds, etc). Necessary investments in infrastructure just aren't taking place on a scale that is needed, and that applies to building new reservoirs too (which in itself is a problem due to the amount of land that a reservoir takes up).
  3. Will this abysmal winter ever end? the sooner we get warmth and sunshine, the better.
  4. This sodding weather is almost relentless. Yes, we may get the odd 'nicer' day like today but on the whole it's just damp, grey and thoroughly miserable. What happened to areas of high pressure in Winter that sat over the UK for at least a few days, maybe a week, and gave dry, settled weather and wall to wall sunshine? Now all we get is a diving jet stream and low after low after low .......... There, that's my moan for the day.
  5. Don't worry, we'll get the desired cold weather charts just when we don't want them, in April and/or May ........
  6. Yeah, but you know what some people are like - they'll downplay things that affect others but only while they themselves aren't inconvenienced, however those same people doing the downplaying are the ones who yell and scream when they are inconvenienced, and that's because they are often incapable of coping. It's the "I'm all right Jack" attitude.
  7. That's your tiles being lifted by the wind and dropping back down, I've had that happen some years ago and in my case no harm done. Hopefully it won't get any worse than that.
  8. The forecast wind gusts and potentially worst affected areas are reminding me of Storm Darwin from 12th February 2014. Does anyone have any charts from that to compare?
  9. Certainly something to keep an eye on, I've experienced a few good events from danglers in the past.
  10. Do as I have done - add all of the problematic posters to your ignore list. It'll take a while but it's well worth it - I now mainly only see those posts which are actually useful. Reading this thread is now a pleasure, not a chore. In addition to that there is of course the very useful Highlights thread, but that does rely on others actually marking posts from here as Insightful and not abusing the feature. 11. This post should be stickied and put in large bold letters at the top of each page ............. and even then the usual suspects will unfortunately ignore it. Still, it may help some, therefore where's the harm in trying?

  13. The model thread is fine if you have most of the posters on ignore.
  14. While I appreciate the idea behind the Highlights thread, it does depend on people marking relevant posts in the model thread as Insightful (and not abusing the feature .....). I prefer to see useful posts as soon as they appear in the main thread (sometimes even before anyone has Liked them, or Thanked them, or marked as Insightful). That's not knocking the Highlights thread either, it's useful and long may it continue. It just doesn't always fit my personal requirements, that's all.
  15. It is possible, you just put 99% of the posters on ignore - all I mostly see now are posts from people who know what they are talking about and who post good, analytical content with no hype or hysteria (which is the way that the thread should be). I think I may have the largest ignore list on this forum ........
  16. I would recommend not taking any notice of the BBC forecasts - they've been useless for a number of years.
  17. I couldn't agree more - we need at least a month of dry weather to allow time for the water levels to properly go down, and even after that we definitely don't want weeks of persistent rain leading into Spring because then we'd be back to square one with the current high water levels.
  18. It's a form of gambling, but instead of spending money they spend vast amounts of emotion on mostly fruitless chases. The winnings can be huge but are extremely rare and difficult to achieve.
  19. I think it's ridiculous. Tempted to say that it's 'Nanny State' nonsense but I have a hunch that there's more to it than that.
  20. Just hover the mouse pointer over the user's name and some info will appear, including the ignore button. This may be different if you're on an Android device though.
  21. Yeah, I've been thinking that for some time - either climate change is causing their modelling some severe problems or they're just not trying hard enough. I look look at their online forecasts and they are often moderately to very wrong - I can get a better forecast by reading this forum and looking at the model output.
  22. If I may express a preference (why not, everyone else is ....... ) I don't give a damn if it's cold or not, just as long as it's calm and dry. That'll do me for a few weeks.
  23. Let's hope that arome and arpege's massive wind downgrades are correct then.
