  1. thanks to Cheese Rice for a clear (read easy to understand) look at the models for the next couple of days. not sure i want the 70mph wind on tuesday but thanks for the mention of the irish sea convection which could cause showers over isle of man and then into northern ireland and north west england. i have hovered on these boards for many winters and i would agree that because many of the guests are looking for cold this thread has ended up looking into FI, even in my honest opinion T144 is too far out to be accurate or reliable! also what's wrong with a HP if it brings fog or frost? dull and dreary is still weather have a safe happy and healthy New Year to eveyone.
  2. sorry no pictures this time. i havent got a SLR camera which probably get the resolutiion better. your mountains are so far away that they just look like the sky on pictures taken with a 9mp compact. sorry. stay safe
  3. having stalked these boards for many years, i still dont understand how to clearly read all the numerous models. i tend to defer to the 12Z GFS as my favourite. as far as a cold spell goes over Christmas, we shouldnt need to wish for one as we had one last year! it's amazing how short our memories are. sustained cold and freezing conditions are only lovely and awesome if you dont have to continue normal life and work. we have to remember all the people and all the planning and organisation.who work tirelessly to maintianing our safety and our services throughout all the cold weather. we have had a skittering across the tops and wet snow across the central belt of the isle of man already in the past couple of days. i also would agree that the temps will rise a bit but with the wind i wouldnt call it much milder. with family coming for christmas i'd rather they arrived safely and got the chance to travel home safely too. now cold around my birthday would be great instead.however i cant check that as its just about a month out so toooo deep in FI. stay safe
  4. love the photos Liam. we can see your beautiful mountains from over here. i exclaimed when i saw them from the road coming down Richmond Hill, Braddan. awesome white against the blue sky. we only have a skittering across the tops and some wet snow at lower levels in the central belt from that Cheshire streamer last night. stay safe.
  5. exactly verglas! skittering of snow over tops, nothing down here in Port Erin, maybe a little on the top of south barrule up The Sloc. drizzly sort of a day with showers on and off in douglas. think the buses had a scare as they were back on within 40mins! chaos i agree. however still would like some snow to take picutures of. we did get sooo much last year it was amazing, but dangeroous. just would like a fine layer to be all pretty. not sure i want rain and gales for Christmas but i can guess thats what we will get!
  6. http://www.doits.co.im/weather_stations/Pt%20Erin%20New.jpeg this is the Port Erin Commissioners weather station. not sure how well this will work to show my current weather. the equipment is on top of the local RLNI station. did anyone see the excellent episode of COAST today? all round the isle of man and surrounding isles they went. some lovely footage of my blessed isle please stay safe
  7. praying that all these charts dont come off! i live in the irish sea! please people can you mention the isle of man as well as the irish sea in your posts? the sea is not just a sea! its got at least one island in it! nnnooottt liking this one bit stay safe everyone whatever the outcome!
  8. i live in the isle of man - right under that "pink" patch! there are 85,000 other people who live on this rock with me! i have already packed my overnight bag, emergency supplies are in including candles in case of power failures, truely praying that this doesnt happen. local met office giving gust up to 85mph, locally storm force 11. i live on the coast but high enough up not to be lashed by waves. i hope the department of infrastructure give out sand bags to low lying coastal areas for peoples homes. i hope that all companies that deal with power, telecoms, road/sea/air safety, media etc will be ready to deal with the aftermath. stay safe.
  9. Kinda really hoping that at least one of these storms gets downgraded or misses the UK. whilst the Isle of Man didnt suffer as badly as we could have in respects of damage or lack of power or accidents (one tree down across a main road on the east coast), we have been suffering with lack of some supplies, imports from the Mainland and further a field. in relation to this there has been much angst and agression towards both the Government and the only passenger/frieght company, which i dont believe is particularly helpful. i am afraid that these possible storms will raise the tension and angst of the public against both. if everyone plans well then the distruption could be minismised. on a personal note i dont like driving in the high winds. will keep my eyes on the boards and met office both here and in the UK. stay safe all.
  10. lying snow on the uplands and in areas where the sun hasn't reached since 28 Nov 2010 and a fresh covering on the uplands yesterday and over night. so in all so far with this cold snap (not sure that's quite the right word to use!) 11 days of lying snow here on the Isle of Man. not sure that it will remain over the coming days of less cold (not daring to call it mild) but looking at the models the cold and snow showers are set to return mid week next week so guess we can notch this december up as one of the coldest in recent memory. good luck to all out there that cant get to work or school and to those that have come to harm or crisis during this time may your God be with you. ><>
  11. not sure if am the only one from isle of man on here, or if u have had reports? mountain snaefell road closed on monday reopened yesterday, and is now closed again due to a nice covering of snow. log on to the manxradio.com site and link to webcams, look at the laxey road cam is IR and shows good snow hope to be able to report more tomorrow!! watched the trough come down from scotland and join with the lil low north of wales over the irish sea, but is now moving away again. going to go clearish and cold, so we have a freeze. laying snow on hills from monday through to today but little or none at lower levels. no pics as have been at work all week, no way near as bad as you lot have had it, booohooo the joys of living in the middle of the sea! hoping now that the wind has changed to northerly/northwesterly we might get some from a shortwave/trough/cheshire streamer PLEASE!!! no school/work closures (only primary school Ballasalla closed one day this week - no heating - not weather related), no major travel distruption other than the mountain road closed and some flights delayed/cancelled due to your snow have fun, stay safe, travel only if you need to. God bless you all.
  12. Hi all, long time no post i know, love all the new improvements, have been lurking but thought i should report snow in Isle of Man on Tuesday! Mountain (snaefell) road closed all morning! please find attached a pic of Autumn Colours with a skittering over the hills in the background. Location: Glen Vine, 6 miles from the east coast. Time taken: 12noon. Camera: Nokia n73 mobile camera. have attached it as i have not got the ability to "script link" - sorry. take care, stay safe.
  13. hi cyclonic and jimben - yes you're correct, snaefell = snow hill in Norse. the island was conquered over a thousand years ago by the Vikings, who left behind a rich heritage and the longest running parliment in the world. many place names have basis in Norse language and many others are in Manx, our native language. but hey i'm off topic! both of you are welcome to PM me if you'd like to have more info on the Island. good luck lamp-post watching tonight - i think we've seen the last here.
  14. hi has snowed on and off since early afternoon. earlier i said i'd post a short video (mobile phone) but its too big to upload. so here are a couple of pics. the first one is the car park at work at about 4pm (douglas east coast) and the others are later in the day 7pm ish in Peel (my home town west coast at sea level). we were progged possibly maybe wintry showers on a blustery wind. we actually got more than we bargined for! there are 4 closed road orders at this moment due to snow and ice in and around the centre of the island (Snaefell) and there was at least one accident earlier in the evening on a minor road in the west due to the conditions. i'm dead chuffed the 8 yr old in me is now willing it to do it ALL NIGHT, but sadly i think we've seen the last of the ppn. sorry to those who havent had any when it was progged and yipppeee to those who got some. roll on the rest of winter - will we see any more? ?tuesday..... take care, stay safe, and God bless all who are working in this tonight.
  15. continuous light snow here since 1:30pm ish, settling lightly now and then. have short 1 minute video taken with mobile that i'll up load at home. more wintry than i expected from this set up since the pennines usually stop the snow getting here which they have again, but there appears from the radar to be a little trough spanning the irish sea and guess where's in the middle of the green/blue blotch?! yes clever people the isle of man!! take care, stay safe.
