  1. StingJet This tree is an evergreen. It's not mine, it's a huge Leylandii. Eowyn hit us from the SW and hammered that tree so I'm not looking forward to this. In our neck of the woods Eowyn cut off our village and shut down the rail line cos of Leylandii branches coming down everywhere. There are a lot of precarious ones still around.
  2. I'm getting a tad worried about tonight. Power company was supposed to deal with a tree with a huge split branch that is dangling over our overhead power line to the house. They were due week before last. Every time the wind blows the branch dips down towards the line, with maybe 12 inches clearance. During Storm Eowyn a huge branch came down from that tree, cleared the power line by 6 inches and landed on the end of my polytunnel. Forecast has winds to 48 mph between 10pm and midnight and then we get a replay between 9 am and 5 pm tomorrow. Flamin' June...
  3. Surprised how quiet this thread is. Looks like flooding is a major problem.
  4. Geedawg We had a yellow warning for snow, beginning midnight ast night. Thing is, it was hard to tell with all of the overlapping warnings and labels seemingly randomly placed.
  5. Thank you everyone for your insights and input in this thread. It's been a blast and I've learned a lot.
  6. jmp223 If it's already been answered just ignore this post. There were 2 Siberian warmings (I watch for these things) that distorted and then nudged a pointy bit of the polar vortex over North America, culminating in the big freeze in the US down into Florida. South of that temps were still warm and the temp differential supercharged the jet stream. The storm began at the warm/cold boundary in the Gulf of Mexico, passed over Florida and then wound itself up as it traveled along the southern boundary of the supercharged jet stream.
  7. Yay! Red wind warning has ended... and snow and ice warning begins at midnight for us... sigh... prolly just to keep the now amber wind warning company.
  8. I've noticed that the central low pressure has been stuck at 950mb for a good couple of hours.
  9. Sky Full Yes,that's what's happening. IIRC the diameter of the root network of an oak tree is three times the diameter of the crown when undisturbed.
  10. LucyStorms06 Same has happened here, was out surveying damage, talking to a neighbour when a huge gust came through and one of the big trees we were near creaked ominously. We ran for it. I'm hoping it's easing off now. We live up a tree-lined road so we can't avoid them. There's one beech tree in particular that worries me every storm, it leans to the SE and the SE side of the trunk is hollow. I expect it down over our access road every time the wind picks up.
  11. I've noticed something that might be peculiar to my locale. The damaged trees that I've seen with my own eyes so far have all been basically Leylandii, you know, evergreens. There are large branches down in my garden, down on east neighbour's garage, down across the nearby road blocking it, down over the railway line...all Leylandii type and all broken large branches rather than uprooted. We're partially sheltered from the SW where I am. The big deciduous trees have survived so far with only small branches down (about an inch thick and 3 feet long at most). It tends to reinforce my dislike of Leylandii type trees.
  12. Getting blue skies in Central Belt now, winds seem less, but still with some hefty gusts. I'm not breathing a sigh of relief yet, but the worst may be past formy neck of the woods. I'm keeping an eye on @Ross90's posts cos he's west of me and anything nasty will get to him before it gets to me. Ross, I'm counting on you!
  13. Geedawg I'm about 5 miles NE of you, but slightly lower elevation. Been very unpleasant so far.
  14. In other news, the BBC is broadcasting live from Cornwall... sigh...
  15. Bits of trees coming down now, piece of neighbour's tree just landed on my polytunnel
