  1. It is a bit of a downer: - 6.4 here and not a flake to be found. I've just had a peek in the NE forum, they're having a lovely time with the white stuff.
  2. I am in Fleet, NE Hants and generally drop in to the SE group, SW and occasionally Central Southern, usually depending on which direction the weather is coming from
  3. Doh!!!! Thank you. Obviously I'm a bit frazzled keeping up with the posts And thank you too, my hovering doesn't seem to work though!
  4. Normally I can work out the acronyms but GH has me stumped! Help!
  5. Was out walking the dogs when the wind picked up. You can't really see the effect in this video although the trees were swaying heavily, but you can hear it - and catch the flying twigs and bits when a particularly strong gust made me wobble! 20240102_143116.mp4
  6. Removing Christmas decorations on 12th night is a relatively modern practice from the 19th century, as the Christmas season ends at Candlemas on the 2nd Feb. So I enjoy the fruits of my decorating labour during those dark dreary winter days of January too. Interesting too is the fact people grumble about the season starting too early. Again, advent used to start 40 days before Christmas: it was a period of fasting before the feasting commenced on the big day itself. Although outside of the more religious western communities I doubt the fasting gains much traction. So I am definitely on the side of enjoying the twinkling lights, glitter and cheer for as long as possible!
  7. With the general cold positivity in the run up to December with the polar profile and background signals, is there any correlation between them and the Iberian heights. That is, are the heights always likely to appear in these set ups or are we just particularly unlucky this year?
  8. I can't remember who mentioned it much earlier in the thread, but it was highlighted that an SSW could potentially scupper the prospects of cold if the teleconnections are aligned favourably. Is that the case or did I misunderstand?
  9. Temps gradually rising now, up 0.3C last hour to -1.7C. But we did manage an ice day that kept us in freezing fog for the whole day. Apparently now under freezing rain according to radar but nothing reaching the ground as yet.
  10. The freezing fog gave some gorgeous landscape views today. And we managed an ice day here in Fleet. Currently still below at -1.7...but warming up .
  11. It is lovely to have crisp nights (currently -3.4C). Let the dogs out about 30 mins ago and was surprised to see everything glistening with frost already. Not to mention the crunchy grass. Perfect start to winter
  12. Just wanted to drop this in here to remind folk of what is possible. This was 28 Nov 2021...in Odiham, Hampshire. 20211128_192310.mp4
  13. Well I think I ought to call it a night now. Squall line just passed overhead with the expected biblical downpour and the winds now seem to be easing off. Stay safe everyone and also enjoy the magnificence and awe inspiring energy of mother nature.
  14. Having the same problem...well, there is a little FOMO too
  15. Winds picking up now here in NE Hants, just recorded over 30mph gusts...they seem pretty sustained too. Battling with myself...should sleep but FOMO is keeping me awake ( along with the rattling blinds - no double glazing in our old cottage).
  16. Uptick in gusts here in NE Hants now. Pretty sure they are gusts but sound quite sustained at 26mph. It's interesting how it all seems not very much, but as a regular market trader any forecasts with gusts above 25mph make me nervous - they can cause a fair bit of damage to gazebos, stalls and stock so I guess it's the drama of Ciaran being unusual that makes current speeds here a bit disappointing from a weather geek perspective.
