  1. Its understandable that there are few places, or forums, populated by amateur weather observers / data collectors. Is there another online forum I should look into for scratch built, and customized to more extreme weather (than an a purchased off the shelf weather station is suited for) is discussed? If time permits I'd like to get some testing and evaluation in at very cold temperatures this winter (so I have until about mid to late March before -40 and colder isn't likely) Thanks!
  2. I didn't get the HOBO modified or in use before winter set in. As posted earlier our temperatures here are colder than most sensors specified operating range. Of particular interest to me is to acquire a temperature sensor that will not only operate at colder than -40C, but have both 0.1 C degree precision while maintaining accuracy to -45C. While I'd like to keep costs down I realize that the cost will be significantly more than a typical weather station sensor. I'll also be looking at other sensors for wind, pressure, and more, and I'd like to have the station battery (solar/micro wind charger) powered. The HOBO fit will take some time. Maybe before next winter parts of it will be working. It was originally only a weather logger. I'd like to keep the logging function and add APRS radio capability. Anyone here doing that?
  3. I went out with a digital camera (I also like analogue photography, which has its place I think in the cold) and took these pictures. "A slice of Yellowknife on New Year's Day".
  4. Hi Emmett, not familiar with the lingo there, not sure of the meaning of "a slice of Yellowknife". Sunrise is not quite two hours away (we're far enough south that we still get something less than five hours from sunrise to sunset on the solstice), if you were looking for a photo or two it will be a couple of hours.
  5. Its just after 7AM, the temperature dropped to -41C before midnight. Yellowknife, NT - 7 Day Forecast - Environment Canada WEATHER.GC.CA Current conditions and forecasts including 7 day outlook, daily high/low temperature, warnings, chance of precipitation, pressure, humidity/wind chill (when applicable) historical data, normals, record values and... The above link will show the current weather at the time it is clicked on, here is my weather at 7AM my local time: Condition:Mist, Pressure:101.9 kPa, Tendency:Falling Temperature:-41.7°C, Dew point:-45.5°C, Humidity:67% Wind:NE 11 km/h, Wind Chill:-54, Visibility: 2 km
  6. As it doesn't look like I'll get the HOBO weather logger going for winter, I'd like to use sensors from it for a home built weather station. It has a Solar Radiation (Silicon Pyranometer) Sensor that would be nice to tap into, an anemometer (no wind direction), a tipping bucket rain gauge (I have the calibration documentation, it will be covered for the winter), a ground level thermometer, screened temperature and humidity probes, and a bird feeder hanging from it. The bird feeder I can figure out, I was looking for ways to employ a Raspberry Pi or Arduino to read some of the other sensors, or alternative sensors like the DS18B20 or other for temperature, possibly a combined temperature and humidity sensor and output the data in a readable format, or for my permafrost monitor, record it. Are there forum participants that do homebuilt weather stations? I have plenty of removed (calender life expired) high quality primary (not rechargeable) lithium batteries from aviation emergency locator beacons that will work great at our coldest temperatures.. It would be nice if the other components also worked at low temperatures (colder than -40 if available) Ron
  7. I'm afraid that I'm not very good at describing white-outs, I think that we're in a semi-arid zone and normally we do not have a lot of precipitation. In recent years precipitation has been a little unpredictable on the short term. We do accumulate maybe a metre or two so of snow in the bush over the winter but the rate of fall and wind conditions for a white-out would be a rare event. Temperatures, personal observation is that we should expect ten days a winter with -40 or colder. The winter of 2013-14 we had a stretch of colder than -40 temperatures long enough to gel the propane in lines from the cylinders (aka pigs) and we lost heat and more. That winter the electricity failed for a few hours and many places, including commercial buildings had plumbing freeze and burst. We do have some high wind days. And of course aurora, in late summer noctilucent clouds (doesn't get dark enough to see stars before mid-August), and more than a few winter days with very heavy frost (soft rime icing). There are a lot of things you may see here during our winter that may surprise you, including in the coldest weather ravens with white frost on their heads from the moisture in their breath condensing and freezing onto the feathers on their heads. We're also known for our winter ice roads, and air strips. If I can post pictures to this site I may do that from time to time.
  8. The loss of permafrost is very serious here, apart from infrastructure damage, as it melts it may be the largest emitter of methane into the atmosphere. If the UK Raspberry Pi weather stations for schools project caught on here I would like to see it include soil temperature monitoring of permafrost.
  9. No problem John, it is not common (for amateur users) weather monitoring equipment.. I think that it may take a little reverse engineering on my part to see what data I can use from it, and how to use the sensor data. In the meantime I've also been considering using a R Pi for data collection and APRS. And before the ground freezes up (maybe only days away) I have already driven a pipe into the ground (hopefully below the permafrost level) and would like to record temperatures of the permafrost here. Lots of winter projects
  10. Hi, I'm Ron from Yellowknife, NWT, Canada. A few years back I was sent a salvaged Onset/Hobo H21-00 weather logging station that had disassembled and left for scrap. Late this summer I re-assembled it, downloaded and installed the Onset "Boxcar" software for it and was interested in using the live data out to feed an APRS station. Failing that, I was wondering whether the sensors could be used with another (RPi based perhaps) weather station. Is there anyone here familiar with the Onset Hobo weather equipment?
