So I have gone ahead, purchased and setup a GW1003. For those who are interested I have a few observations. - The product seems well built and is fairly trivial to assemble. The manual is okay. - There are multiple IOS apps to choose from for setup of the gateway itself. I initially chose Ecowitt, which at at least on an iPad (IOS 15) was not able to register with Ecowitt. I registered on the website and used the app on an iPhone (IOS 12) to setup the GW1003. After adding a rule in my firewall to block external access by the GW1003, the Ecowitt app changed to Offline. This app requires access to the ecowitt servers. I installed one of the two other IOS apps, WS View Plus. This actually seems to be better for device setup, although the current weather page is basic, esp compared to the Ecowitt app. Once I had disabled ecowitt.net as a weather service the GW1003 was connecting to NTP servers, which I had allowed, but nothing else. So in answer to my original question, access to the internet is required for the GW1003 for time updating, and for firmware updates, which the app is nagging me about.. Also according to this forum post, https://www.ecowitt.com/shop/forum/forumDetails/189, the gateway will reconnect wifi. I do not think this is happening in my case. I will see how the sensors go for reliability with all of them working out of the box. Next step is to set up a custom weather server! Jon

An update ... The touchscreen on the WMR200 has started working again, so while the urgency has eased (it is funny how not being able to read the temperature, or the amount of rain, is a problem!), I will still repalce it. So I would still appreciate help on the GW100n. At this stage I like the GW1003. Another question about the Ecowitt products would be the reliability of the sensors? The WMR200 solar panel and outside temperature gauge are original, so are about 12 years old. The anemometer vane broke after one of these tried to land on it (Sulphur-crested Cockatoo | BirdLife Australia), and the rain sensor has been replaced. Not bad for our weather, which while it never gets that cold, can be super hot, with sometimes large hail in spring and summer from storms! Jon

Hi folks, I have a OS WMR200 that has just had a terminal failure (touchscreen unresponsive) and have been looking at my options for a replacement. Amazingly I have found a unused WMR200 for sale at $AUD399. That is attractive as I get a new set of sensors as well, and the indoor temperature sensor will work. That said I would really like to move away from needing a dedicated screen. I have been looking at purchasing sensors used for weather recording in rural situations and a Raspberry Pi/Arduino combination with custom software. While I am a developer, so the software is no problem, the cost of the sensors was way too high So back to the GW100n range! Does the gateway have to be connected to the ecowitt servers to function? Similarly, does the IOS/Android app require to be connected to the ecowitt servers to function. The OS inside temperature sensor is 433MHz. What are my chances of it working with the GW100n? Ecowitt do not list the GW100x, rather GW110n range, however Amazon only list the GW100n. I cannot find anything on the Ecowitt website about the GW100n range, apart from firmware updates and manuals. It looks like the GW110n supersedes the GW100n? Has anyone attempted to allow external access to the GW100n through a firewall using the app? For the future it looks like CumulusMX offers a lot of customisation possibilities. Hopefully not to much of a RTFM in the questions above. BTW I did scan the manual for the GW1003. Jon
