  1. And still it is raining! and the wind up again. The spinning on a coin is what is driving me mad, there’s no possibility of consistency in temperature. No one expects consistency in weather. Rain, sun, wind from one day to another in this country is a given, but is it too much to expect at this time of year some levelling out of temperature? Yes, May next week! Am resorting to reading the model threads to see when the jet stream might feel like shifting….am I losing my sanity?
  2. Hmmm, missed opportunity for getting in the garden yesterday but hey ho! Grey and light rain so far this morning…hopefully it’ll clear by this aft. @Wold Topperthink you should have underlined your word ‘again’ . However, impressive stack & presumably overflow? Thought you had a covered store? Keep up the good work!
  3. Finally the bite in that wind has eased, a thoroughly pleasant spring day on the wolds. Not a lot of warmth to the sun yet but the absence of wind is enough for now….and finally the planting has begun in earnest this year
  4. Rain seems to be the theme for Rome, with several severe weather warnings over the last week I’ve been monitoring. The rain mac will have to be packed! But temps are mild in the high teens so hoping to be lucky in a week or so ️.
  5. Hi @Josh Romano, am heading over to Italy again this year. Any predictions for March in Rome this year? I noticed you commented that March 2022 was a cold one but nothing of last year. Would love to know what to expect. The idea is going to Rome early will avoid the heat and crowds
  6. You were right again @Wold Topper, just miserable rain all day. Strangely the valley on the other side of the hill had snow falling in the sleet but too wet to lay. Then turned to rain again once dropped down to Scarbados. Only drama we’ve had on the wolds is power cut yet again. No idea why…you’d forgive it if it was due to snow! An hour off this morning, just enough to make you realise you’d better charge things up, which thankfully I did. Went off again at 2.30pm & not looking positive for it to be back on til later this evening if we’re lucky. Currently sat twiddling thumbs with candles & fire on.
  7. Just driven home over the top of the Wolds….clear skies, 0c and ground frost laying already. Will it stay cold for the rain band to bump into? We’re not expecting to see anything falling until mid morning so a lot could change by then…. I’ll get the snow boots ready just in case
  8. Well I for one am just enjoying the here and now. Tomorrow…come what may A pleasant break from the blustery weather of late and some sunshine to boot . Interesting band of cloud.
  9. @Wold Topper sorry Wold Topper, just catching up again…thankfully our BT stayed in tact . I hear those that it blew out are still waiting for fix! Although the gusts didn’t seem as strong with Jocelyn it was a more consistent strength throughout the night & tbh I enjoyed falling asleep to the noise! A pretty grim day today just sat in cloud, no visibility & drizzling. With 2 storms under our belt this week I suppose we can’t complain about a bit of stillness!!
  10. Well I for one am still waiting to make a cup of tea! Power lines definitely down (probably because they were only tied on with string in the first place) so impact is real. Power been off for over 12hrs now. Apparently Powergrid are sat in the local pub carpark for support…probably too windy still for someone to go up a pole yet?! Can anyone make me a brew?
  11. Local weather station is only recording gusts of 42mph here but genuinely feels a lot stronger. Now power ️ has just gone off!!
  12. Can’t believe you chose that way! The road that space, time & weather forgot? It never thaws once it’s on that road! You just like the challenge
  13. Yes, a very pretty outlook….glad I don’t need to be anywhere today. Just working from home, setting up a new computer! Take care if you’re out in it
  14. Shockingly car gauge driving home into village showing -5c before 6.30pm . Didn’t get above 0c today, walked dogs in -3c this morning. Definitely another cold one tonight
  15. Well that’s good, I’ve got plenty of winter clothes at the ready!! Didn’t need them so much in Antarctic
  16. Expedition trip - of a lifetime! Always wanted to go but never thought possible then opportunity arose. Enjoyed all the landscape, wildlife & science bits on board . Weirdly I’m disappointed that we had the best run of weather, almost unheard of….a run of days of sunshine and little wind. Feel a bit cheated I’ve not experienced the ‘real’ Antarctic …but made for a spectacular trip.
  17. This is in no way an attempt to offer any scientific perspective but it seemed a good place to share my recent experience of sea ice in the Antarctic. All I can tell you is even at the start of the summer period sea ice still impacted our journey, blocking us from proceeding to intended destinations on 2 occasions, once sea ice was too much for the larger ship we were on, the second occasion was too much around the shore for the small zodiac vessels we used for landing, which was understandable. But what I have learned is the different types of sea ice… The thickest of the sea ice we sailed through before we had to turn back… Examples of Pancake sea ice Examples of Brash sea ice - the latter blocking our way to the landing site, the buildings on the island is Damoy Point All examples of Bergy bits (really, these are official technical terms!) Block iceberg in the distance Possibly a pinnacle iceberg (they’re a bit scary when they start to appear on the horizon) When you see icebergs of all shapes & sizes, as far as the eye can see….it looks like a city The site of where an iceberg has calved…. And finally, when there is very little sea ice and the water is like a mirror!
  18. @Jo Farrow is there any international shipping forecast sites? I’ve tried googling but it all brings up BBC shipping forecast….surely there must be others (I’m looking for South America region…)
  19. It’s looking like tomorrow will be the worse of it but there was enough rain last night to call off potato lifting today….no-one wants a soggy potato!
  20. Thank you so much, learned something new! Had a play last night but didn’t pick anything up. As no one else seems to have posted (here or twitter…can’t be arsed to call it ‘X’ )… I assume the aurora wasn’t very active last night. But major thanks for helping on the camera tech
  21. Once again hopes were dashed - lots of tweets coming in from North York Moors last night & I’m in Glaisdale….just couldn’t see it & phone didn’t pick it up . Am I just missing out on timing or are cameras people are using enhancing it and actually in real life it’s not that clear to see?????
  22. Didn’t expect the thunder & lightening at 4.20am and then again at 6am with torrential rain most of the night! Thought it was only going to be ‘moderate’ . We have the river flowing down our street. Meanwhile, up Scarb way… This is Scalby/Scarb at the mo….
