Another one from me This is in the Winter Half Year: The month opened with a mild and wet day before a cold front from the NW which then brought a cold and sunny day on the 2nd. For the next few days it was changeable with a mix mild Westerlies and cold NW-ly bringing spells of rain but also decent amounts of sunshine. For about a week from the 8th it turned quite dull with a low moving from North-South and it turned cold and wet for a time before the wind direction turned Easterly and for 3 days it was cold (temperatures around 1-2c) with spells of heavy snow in the South. After that it all turned to rain and then the 14th turned milder with settled weather following from the 15th-19th, with temperatures near average by day but very cold at night. It remained settled for the rest of the month but it was also very dull and cold (apart from the last couple days), with winds from the East or North-East. It was a cold and dry month for all but not exceptionally so. It was dull in the SE but sunnier further NW

The idea of this thread is to think of any weather month and describe how the weather played out, e.g the first week was unsettled, the second week was settled. Also you can describe notable weather events that happened (But dont make it obvious) and/or the type of synoptics that prevailed. The aim is for people to guess that month you are describing Rules are : 1. Before describing the month, you must state if that month is in the summer half year (April-September) or winter half year (October-March) 2. You can say whether the month overall was wet/dry, dull/sunny or cold/warm but do not state e.g "Sunniest on record" or "Coldest since xxxx". You can say which part of the country did best or worst but dont make it sound too obvious 3. Try and make it as difficult as you can if it gets too easy 4. If nobody guess correctly, you can give upto 3 clues; can be related to non-weather events e.g music, politics etc Heres one to start: This month is in the Summer half year The first 10 days of the month were very wet and dull for most areas with winds often from the SW quadrant, but temperatures were above average instead of below. It turned more settled for a couple days but still rather warm, then a cold front moved from the NW on the 15th and brought in a day of "kitchen sink" weather. The following 4 days were mixed with sunny spells and heavy showers with temperatures now slightly on the cool side and then a High Pressure system brought more settled weather on the 20th-24th though it was rather cool and also rather cloudy and damp after a sunny period on the 20th and 21st. Low Pressure returned on the 25th and for a few days were it was distinctly chilly for the time of year and turning very wet on the final weekend but milder air followed and the final day of the month was sunny and quite warm. The month was a wet and dull for all areas

Summer8906 Hmmm, the GFS 00z is showing a lot of NW-lies, so perhaps just a lot of convective sunshine and shower days, so not totally dire. About the 06z, I hope the pressure pattern verifies but a bit questionable about the heat, 37c is completely and unnecessarily hot, and exceptionally hot for an Easterly flow (Only time that situation happened in the past was August 2020). We dont need anything higher than 30c -

HarvSlugger Its been very sunny in the East but duller in the West. It has been a decent June but its hard to believe that this June is going to beat June 2023 which was literally the best June I ever lived through. Even for my location in the Midlands, I seem to remember most of the sunshine was only between the 10th and 19th and then a bit more to come in the last few days and the rest being Atlantic dominated but with June 2023, I remember the Atlantic only got in on the 27th and before then the only cloud/rain were a bit of North Sea cloud at the start and some thunderstorms mid-month -

How on earth is this June the warmest and possibly one of the sunniest on record? Just HOW? It may have felt very warm because it was so humid but it doesnt deserve to be sunnier or warmer than June 2023, that was an exceptionally good month and June 2025 while decent was nowhere near as good as June 2023. There wasnt even a good thunderstorm this month while June 2023 had three thunderstorms. Im giving June 2025 a 7/10 and June 2023 a perfect 10/10 Its looking like July could shape out to be yet another very sunny month, just hopefully in Spring 2025 style and hopefully not excruciatingly hot or humid -
Next one, the ascending 0s, using 1995-2024 again Best : January 2010 - A classic cold and snowy month, the most obvious choice February 2021 - Could have picked 2001 but I wanted that for December, so this one it is and it still had that bitterly cold Easterly in the first half and a spring-like end March 2012 - The best March I ever lived through until 2025 for how sunny and exceptionally warm it was. 2022 was also a good month April 2013 - Could have picked 2003 but I wanted something chilly for April after a warm March so its this one, and that month was also fine and bright May 2004 - The other two options were poor so its this one. Not outstandingly good but had warm and sunny weather mid-month June 2015 - A sunny and dry month, if rather cool at times July 2006 - Obvious August 1997 - Another hot and sunny month, if somewhat humid September 2018 - Somewhat mixed but the start and end was very nice October 1999 - FIne and sunny until the 20th then an unsettled end. Not bad for October November 2020 - Had to pick this one unfortunately because I already used 2010 for January and didnt want to use 2000 for November. This one at least had lots of seasonal fog and at least wasnt too wet December 2001 - A highly rare cold, sunny and anticyclonic winter month. Obvious choice Worst : January 2020 - A mild and wet drabfest of a month, with only a few cold and sunny days mid-month February 2011 - Depressingly dull, damp and also mild March 2002 - A rather dull month but was a nice final week. Clearly worse than the other two options by miles April 2023 - Not a terrible month but still rather cool, cloudy and changeable May 2014 - Was either this or 2024 but this one had an absolutely dire final third making this the worst option, and 2024 was warmer despite being dull June 1995 - Unfortunately all 3 of the Junes were good but this one is the least good of the three because of the cool and cloudy first half July 2016 - Not a bad month; just cool, cloudy and dry with some hot weather mid-month. Clearly worse than the other two options August 2017 - A rather unsettled, wet, dull and cool month apart from the BH Weekend September 1998 - I believe this one was a very dull and wet month apart from about a week or so of fine weather mid-month October 2019 - Very wet, dull and also cool November 2000 - Very very windy and windy. Disgraceful month December 2021 - A mild, dull and damp month with no sunshine at all in the second half. At least it had that foggy spell mid-month
-
My next go at this, now starting with the "9s" sticking to the 1995-2024 years Best : January 2019 - A mixed month with some cold and frosty weather later on February 2000 - Problem is neither of the 3 Februaries were good but this one was the least bad and had plenty of sunshine, so 2000 it is March 2011 - A generally fine, warm and sunny month; the obvious choice April 2002 - A mostly warm, sunny and dry month with only the last few days being wet. 2022 was decent as well May 2023 - Plenty of warm and sunny weather but had a tendency for North Sea cloud later on. Some good thunderstorms too June 2014 - A warm, bright and thundery month July 1995 - The obvious choice, some changeable weather early on and a warm/hot and sunny second half August 2016 - Was either this or 1996 but I only remember 2016 and this was generally dry and sunny without excessive heat September 1997 - Another fine and sunny month October 2018 - A very sunny month with notable warm and cold spells and only short wet periods November 1999 - None of the 3 options were great eiter but the other 2 were dreadful and this one while mild and changeable was at least not so wet nor dull December 2010 - Obviously Worst : January 1999 - A mostly mild, wet and windy month, though at least sunny February 2020 - A mild and extremely wet and windy, horrible month. Could have picked 2010 but at least 2010 had some cold weather March 2001 - A month of alternating cold and mild but it was very wet and very dull. Argueably worse than March 2023, though one redeeming thing about this month was the snow on the 21st April 2012 - Another horrible month. Cold, wet and dull May 2003 - A boring, Atlantic dominated month though with a warm and sunny final week. "Spring" finally arrives by then June 2004 - The first half was quite good but then the second half turned poor with some truly dire days for June. Not a terrible month overall but the worst of the three July 2015 - The month was below par and at times dire after the heat spike at the start. August 2006 - A warm and humid start but then cooler and eventually wet and dull later on September 2017 - A boring Westerly month with no interest whatsoever October 1998 - A wet and dull month, and also cold I beleive November 2019 - A dire, horrible month. Extremely wet and dull, very under-hated IMO December 2020 - The least snowiest December of the three though still had cold spells at times though was mild and wet in the middle Another largely dire year, with literally no good months at all apart from a period from late-May to mid-June and a couple days at the start of July. Other than that, it was either boring or downright horrible
-
Now another attempt, starting with 8s, using years 1995-2024 Best January 1998 - Already a problem here; neither of the "8" Januaries are really good but this one is the least bad of the three and had some cold spells at times with some mild and wet weather February 2019 - An obvious choice because of that record breaking warmth at the end and the sunniest February on record. Could have picked 2009 but wanted that for December March 2000 - The best out of the three. Mild, dry and bright April 2011 - Outstandingly warm, sunny and dry May 2012 - Neither of the three Mays were good but this ones the most interesting with some Northerlies early on and a warm and sunny final third June 2023 - A very warm, sunny and also thundery month. Best June I ever experienced July 2014 - Another warm, sunny and thundery month. Quite underrated August 1995 - Obviously September 1996 - Decided to pick this one because September 2016 was too cloudy and humid and September 2006 was decent but too warm, this September i believe was consistently fine and settled October 1997 - Pretty underrated; warm and sunny first and third week, cold and sunny final week. More Spring-like than October-like November 2018 - 1998 was better but I already used it for January, though this one while mild was not too bad with some sunny weather at times December 2009 - Obvious choice This would be the driest and sunniest year on record, with the summer being notably good. Winter is generally pleasant; with the cold and snowy December and some cold weather in late-January, as well as the spring-like February; only the first half of January is poor. Spring is also decent, with April standing out as the notably good month with only early-May seeing any bad weather. Summer started early on 21st May and the summer was exceptional, with abundant sunshine and warmth throughout with thunderstorms, culminating at the outstanding August. Autumn started nicely with a pleasant September and October, though by November it started to turn more changeable Worst January 2008 - Mild and wet February 1999 - Mild and wet March 2010 - Decent first half but mild and wet second half April 2001 - A rather cold, dull and wet month May 2002 - A boring Atlantic dominated month June 2013 - Not bad overall with a sunny first week but mostly cloudy and cool afterwards. Least good of the three July 2004 - A poor month overall with the first half being dire but some warmth towards the end August 2015 - A mostly wet and dull month with some fine interludes September 2016 - The heat spike was notable but most of the month was non-descript and cloudy but not terrible October 2017 - Neither of the three options were bad but I chose 2017 because it was the cloudiest month, though still dry November 2008 - Seems liike a rather non-descript cloudy and dry month, though cold at times December 2019 - Seasonal first few days then mild and wet afterwards. A poor month overall This is more of a boring year than an absolute dire-fest like the last one, perhaps only slightly wetter than average but still a duller than average year. Winter was just a mild and wet washout overall with very few cold interludes, then Spring was quite dull, damp and boring though early-March brought some interest. Summer was a borefest overall with not much heat then Autumn was not too bad, just dry and cloudy

My attempt; Im going to go with 1995-2024 starting with 7s Best year : January 1997 - Cold and snowy, clearly the best option February 1998 - Actually wanted 2008 for all that sunny weather and the frosty spell mid-month but that would leave 2018 or 1998 for December, so 1998 it is and this was still quite a good month with plenty of spring-like weather too March 2009 - A mostly sunny and spring-like month with changeable weather at times April 2010 - Actually picked this one instead of 2020 because this one didnt have too much early warmth but still had plenty of sunshine May 2001 - The best May out of the three, had some thunderstorms too June 2022 - Easily the best June out of the three. Changeable but with plenty of warm and sunny periods July 2013 - The obvious choice. Warm, sunny and dry for almost three weeks then thunderstorms August 2024 - Was either this or 2004; August 2004 was interestingly thundery but also poor in the second half and this one was consistently OK so 2024 it is September 2015 - Somewhat mixed but had plenty of sunny and dry weather with warm days and cool nights October 2016 - A rather pleasant and dry month though actually rather cloudy for me but sunnier everywhere else. Better than the other 2 options though November 2017 - Often sunny and dry with some cold spells December 2008 - The only good option there is. Plenty of cold and frosty weather Worst year : January 2007 - Mild and wet, though at least had a cold spell later on February 2008 - Unfortuately all 3 Februaries here were good and I am forced into picking this one despite how good it is. I cant pick 2018 because the BFTE on the last day followed by mild weather the next day would be quite an unrealistic synoptic change when you put the year together. Think of this one as an interlude in a very poor year March 2019 - Perhaps the most boring and least good March out of the three, with a very wet first half but had a dry and sunny second half April 2000 - A horrible, very wet and dull month but with some snow at times May 2021 - Very wet, dull and cool. The worst May I ever experienced June 2012 - Absolutely disgusting; wet, cool and dull July 2023 - This just gets worse and worse. Another cool, wet and dull month August 2014 - Another cool month but at least not horribly dull, though still had some very wet spells. The dire year makes this month look more like August 1995 in comparison September 1995 - Yet another poor month; not even September brings in any nice weather after the dire summer October 2006 - A typical mild, wet, dull and boring Autumn month November 1997 - The run of wet and dull months continues December 1998 - Another mild, dull and wet month but with a cold start An absolutely dire year; the wettest and dullest on record. The only dry month all year is February. Spring is horrible; very wet and dull apart from the second half of March and the last 5 days of May. The summer is absolutely dreadful, with all three months being cooler, wetter and duller than average (Only the August sees close to average sunshine). There is no heat all summer except for just one day at 28c on July 7th. Autumn and Winter is boring, mild, wet and dull as well without the only decent month all year being February

Just for randomness, what would be your favourite wind direction for anticyclonic and cyclonic conditions?? For example for me I prefer Easterlies or South-Easterlies in anticyclonic conditions, especially in the summer and for cyclonic conditions i prefer North-Westerlies as it usually means convection, showers and sunshine; also the occasional cyclonic Easterly as well for the thunderstorms -
Summer8906 I am seeing shades of a 1997 style summer repeat with perhaps a less-bad June; which i hope does happen. I mean January was mostly cold and dry like 1997 except this January had short wet spells, March and April were dry, sunny and warm like 1997, May has also been rather 1997-like (Warm, sunny and dry with a Northerly period in both months, one being more potent than the other) except the unsettled week is at the end. Hopefully this we get a "poor" June but not as wet nor dull as 1997 or 2012, and then a dry and sunny but not exceptionally warm July (like 1997) and a hot and sunny August (Again, like 1997), and September/October following are dry and sunny (Ofc 1997 repeats)
-
My ideal Summer (for fun) June : The first three weeks are a mix of Westerlies, Northerlies and some showery periods with some average-to-warm and sunny weather in between. Final third becomes more generally warmer and anticyclonic with Easterlies, something like the end of May 2023. Slightly cooler than average, average rainfall and somewhat sunnier than average July : Starts how June ended with anticyclonic, sunny Easterlies for the first 10 days with average temperatures and some North Sea cloud at times, then mid-month is a prolonged heatwave with maybe 1 brief thundery interlude on a 30c+ day; something like mid-July 2013 where it is just very sunny rather than extremely hot, followed by thunderstorms around the 21st/22nd and the month ends with a North-South split the other way round, with thunderstorms in the South and fine weather further North and average temperatures overall, like early-September 2024 but not as dull. Warm and Sunny overall but very wet in South due to a wet final 10 days August : Starts with a NW-ly spell following the wet end to July for the South, then afterwards for a couple weeks its a North-South split the correct way round, with frequent fine and warm weather for Yorkshire southwards and rain in the North; a couple frontal systems bring rain for the whole country. Then maybe a brief general unsettled, autumnal spell around the 18th followed by a Northerly, then a rebuild of high pressure for the whole country, meaning the late-August BH Weekend is warm and sunny, leading to a hot and thundery spell shortly after with another Northerly following. Warm, sunny and dry for much of the Southern half, much less so further North
-
LetItSnow I would just say come up with your own but Id say constraints are : If your going for a completely dry June and/or August, incorporate 1 or 2 changeable weeks in July (Can be any kind of changeable e.g Changeable Westerlies or like my attempt, Cyclonic Easterlies) Temperatures irrelevent and can vary, but my rule will be no unrealistic heat (as in the record of >40c) nor any unrealistically cool weather (no less than like 12-13c by day) Maybe contain at least 1 significant weather event e.g thunderstorms or an autumnal storm, unless your going for a completely dry July
-
After doing these threads on March-June, August and October, this is one for July July starts with a ridge of High Pressure on the 1st bringing a mostly sunny day with near average temperatures. By the 2nd, a low to the North starts to move Southwards and it turns cloudier and wetter but the South still sees a mostly sunny day. The 3rd is then very wet and cold for the North, and by the 4th, everywhere from Yorkshire southwards sees a very wet and miserable day with some heavy, thundery rain and temperatures surpressed to just the mid-teens, even just 13c around the Eastern coast. The low then retrogresses Westwards and starts to weaken slightly, and the 5th is then a less wet, less cold and slightly brighter day especially for SE areas. Some places have already seen well over half of their monthly average rainfall in just the first 5 days Things improve on the 6th, with the low out in the Atlantic and winds turn more Southerly bringing 2 mostly sunny days with temperatures around or just above average, but thundery showers start to pop up at times in the South and West. It turns even warmer, or in fact borderline hot and humid on the 8th and 9th, with temperatures now in the mid to high 20s, but a plume then moves up from the South by afternoon the 8th and again on the 9th, with more widespread and severe thunderstorms, mainly affecting the Midlands and Central Southern areas, with torrential rain, frequent lightning and golf-ball sized hail. The storms die out on the 10th, with higher pressure from Scandinavia influencing things, with now SE-ly winds bringing sunny, dry and warm weather from the 10th-12th, temperatures around 24-27c widely. A cold front comes down from the North on the 13th and brings cooler air and Northerly winds on the 14th and 15th but the weather remains settled with sunny spells, though rather cool now at around 18-20c with some rather cool nights The High Pressure remains close to the UK with more of an Easterly flow by the 16th lasting until the 22nd, bringing a spell of very sunny (away from the East coast), dry and warm weather, especially in the West with temperaturs eventually in the mid to high 20s again with temperatures around 21-24c inland. There is another spell of hot and humid weather from the 23rd-25th, with High Pressure to the North Sea and Low pressure over the Azores, with temperautres now climbing into the high-20s in many places with clear blue skies at first, but on the 23rd and 24th thundery showers moving SE-NW develop again, often affecting the South, SW and Midlands, with places affected once again seeing severe ones with torrential rain and frequent lightning, and even some tornadoes in SW areas. The highest temperature of the month is 32c in London on the 24th The 26th sees a change, with the Low to the South winning out with a defined North-South split over the next 4 days, where the South is wet, North is fine and Easterly winds dominant. Initially, the South is fine, warm and bright on the 26th with some thundery showers in areas further NW but a spell of heavy thundery rain affects the Southern half on the 27th and 28th, with bands moving from London to Wales via Southampton, while further North and East it remains dull and gloomy with drizzle with only the far North being sunny. On the 29th the Scotland has its hottest day of the month with 29c in the West and it is a warm, sunny but breezy day for everywhere North of around Bedfordshire, with only 20c or lower in Southern areas. The final 2 days remain unstable but warm with a more Southerly flow bringing further thunderstorms but with brighter weather July would be a warm month overall, with temperatures about 1c above average, maybe cooler in the East due to mostly Easterly winds for this month. It would be exceptionally wet in the South, mostly due to a very wet day on the 4th and heavy thunderstorms with the 10th-24th being an anticyclonic period; though perhaps even wetter than July 2007 and 2023 in most of England and Wales but as for Scotland, it would be quite a dry month with most of the rainfall being on the 3rd. Despite all that rain, Sunshine totals would be above average; widely around 200-250 hours and maybe even more for NW Scotland "Changeable but entertaining" would be how I would describe that July
