Very interested to hear that gray wolf, I didn’t realise China had cleaned up its act with regard to atmospheric air pollution or that there was less dimming over there. Have only lived in Oz 7 years but this is the driest and warmest I’ve seen it and every year we seem to break records, it really seems like the climate is drying in south eastern Australia.

It’s astonishing the level and rate at which heat records are being smashed at the moment. genuinely scary and it just makes you wonder what the future holds and how quickly things seem to be developing. hot weather in Aus = not a surprise BUT these extreme days and widespread, extended nature of the heat and constant record breaking is unusual and alarming. loads and loads of records smashed this year and not just by a fraction of a degree here and there.

Sure has been a warm autumn so far. April 2016 was as warm as March 2015 and around 3 degrees above average .

13 days over 20 degrees in a row in Melbourne. Beating the former record for May which was 10 days. Could be several more, too before we are done.

Very interesting post. It would appear there are indications of a wet spring in Southern Australia, we shall see. At the moment more traditional late winters synoptics in place with cool/cold outbreaks , frequent fronts and rain over the last week. Pretty cool and wet in Melbourne today, we struggled to reach double figures for much of the day and it felt pretty cold in the strong winds. However there have been less than a handful of such days this winter and tomorrow it will be milder again. Towards the end of the month temperatures may start to rise (already are doing so inland Australia) in the South and UV levels are already increasing from their winter lows, which should make the sun feel warmer in any bright spells.

After the all time July record of 23 degrees on Thursday, the cooldown has been major. Top of just over 9 degrees in Melbourne today, Saturday, with it hovering around 7 for the majority of daylight hours. Probably the coldest winters day in Melbourne for several years. A cold and wet day with sleet and snow falling above around 700 m. Another cold one tomorrow, with a slow warm up thereafter. Maybe today will have been the coldest day of the winter.

Hot night yesterday in Melbourne - hottest December night for 9 years. It was still 30 degrees at 10 pm and only fell to around 24 degrees at dawn. Now back up to 34 at lunchtime! Thundery breakdown perhaps on the cards for fri-sat.

Already 26 degrees here at 0830 today..... low of 22 last night. blustery hot northerly wind getting up - perhaps we could reach 38 today.

laughable all the headlines a few days ago of our sizzling late autumn indiian summer.20 degrees the papers screamed in desperation! quite sad really - it's ended up literally a very damp squib!

This rain has been hanging around for days, despite the tv forecasters saying it would be gone before the weekend. Dreadful weather, and forecasting.

Wow it rained last night.. and what a lovely autumn day today .

Looks to me at the moment like the closing ceremony will stay dry after a warm day on Sunday,with just the chance of a light shower,

i hardly see any anymore, a few cabbage whites, that's it.

For God's sake don't pray for rain tonight of all nights. There's a huge show going on!

The dress rehearsal this evening was AMAZING. Stunned, moved and totally blown away. It is a truly awesome show. Won't say anything else so as not to spoil the surprise. But it was FANTASTIC!

Oh give it a rest, please. You've had 3.5 months of really cool and wet weather with little sun. So much so, it has been breaking records - in a good way for you. Give us a break for a week, you'll cope - and being in Yorkshire, you're almost guaranteed the weather will be rubbish (or for you, good) again very shortly,of that i'm sure. Let that thought help you cope with shock horror possibility of 25 degrees for a couple of days. Or maybe move to the North of Scotland if you can't deal with the well known tropical south Yorkshire climate.

So the HAARP operators are moving the jet stream just in time for the Olympics, i see! Fingers crossed for a dry and sunny opening to the Games, at least!

The period 1315 to 1317 which ushered in the Little Ice Age probably featured summers like the one we've had so far.... would be interesting if we had proper stats from that period!

Frankly bizarre that after 4 months of pouring rain, a miserable spring and a summer you can't do outdoor, healthy activities in without feeling cold, wet and miserable, and the kids too, at the first sign of a warmish day and some people are delighting in wanting more rain and cold. I'm afraid i know who are the weird ones. i love winter in winter and summer in summer. we've been deprived of even a half way decent spring and summer - its not just been poor, it's been appalling, witness the floods , week upon week of rain every single day, heaps of outdoor events cancelled at great cost and upset. i like to get outdoors and socialise. I can't at the moment without it being a real bother and my house is damp. Those who are wanting yet more rain and cool this year of all years, after what we've had, are very strange, and i can only assume are on the wind up.

The downgrade of the dry and warm day or two next week is very noticeable - another wet week looks on the cards with only tentative signs of an improvement after that as we had towards the start of the Olympics. What a summer.

we are used to crap weather in the uk - lets just get on with it and celebrate all the more! no such thing as bad weather - only the wrong clothing. it will be a wonderful weekend, whatever the weather. I'm determined nothing will ruin it for me.

can't wait til i emigrate to Australia next year!

and here too -it was raining at 9 this morning and hasnt stopped yet, prob won't til tomorrow avo.
