  1. So chionomaniac, does mean that what happens in the stratosphere and troposphere has the big effect, as well as the AO, on our winter weather, ie the main driver? Thanks
  2. The metoffice now have an advisory out for heavy snow on Saturday right down the eastern half of the country.
  3. Joe B from accuweather thinks winter is on the way within the next fortnight. He said it may coincide with Christmas and possibly the next year but whether it affects the UK, he does not state.
  4. The stratospheric warmings taking place over Canada and eastern Siberia won't be in a favourable location to influence our weather like it did in February 2009. The persistence of low angular momentum won't help favour the GWO thus it won't be in any favourable phases to deliver the long awaited cold weather. There will be some cold snaps but not potent enough to be as good as 1963 or 1947, or greatly in frequency. The -NAO pattern which is to favour our colder weather prospects is not yet totally clear whether it has come to fruition as yet. Not enough westerly wind burst across the tropics have helped. It is unclear whether El Nino will play any part in influencing the winter weather.
  5. There hasn't been a white xmas just north of Glasgow for a few years in the Dumgoyne, Campsie Fells area. Last good white xmas I clearly remember were as TWS mentioned 2004, 2000 and I think 2005. There has been none since. Here's hoping for a change this year. The past few years festive periods have been high pressure dominated with nothing but mist and fog or frost and crisp sunshine.
  6. Heavy snow shower just north of Glasgow in Blanefield near the Campsie Fells.
