  1. Yip this happened to me, I was waiting for a bus on princes street at that time. Next thing I know wham. I was insane. I've never seen anything like it, even the hail was big it was a good 4mm in diameter.
  2. So back home in Helensburgh for the holidays...and I have to say, been a long time since I've seen this much rain, it's bouncing outside, absoloutly bouncing. I've been out of it for the last week following my surgery, someone wanna give me a quick low down on what I've missed / what is coming up?
  3. 3.3C outside, nippy noodles. Feel bad for the three legged fox limping around out side on our street.
  4. First touch of snow is always special. I just with it had waited another two days damnedit! It feels cold in Edinburgh today even though its 8.3C the wind chill is pretty bad today...its a bit windy gusting up to 10m/s here.
  5. It wont have changed much on the outside but they refurbished the inside this summer so it has a freaking Costa Coffee in it now ¬_¬ cheers thats really affordable student food EUSA never mind I hide in the bio department and ignore everything else. Ahem. But yeah the new anemometer is crap as well. The whole weather station needs replaced we had a good one like three years ago when I started at the uni and the builders damaged it about a year ago and now the department doesn't have the funding to get a nice one so we're stuck with the bare minimum according to a friend who's doing honours geophysics.
  6. I was walking around Kings Building Campus when that happened and there was about 10 minutes of serious insane horizontal monsoon like rain with hail mixed in. Though I will say now if you are ever looking at the university weather station it tends to underestimate wind speeds and be generous with rain fall since it uses a tipping bucket rain gauge and its on the top of the JCMB building with is 9 floors high so the wind tends to rattle it and give you higher readings.
  7. You can feel the chill in the air tonight, its Baltic in my flat! Though apparently The Water of Leith by Cannonmills in Edinburgh has broke its banks.
  8. *facepalms* oh dear. Oh very dear. Its been a very wet day! Current weather: - University of Edinburgh, Kings Buildings Weather Station.
  9. Oh my word its insane outside. Got soaked with rain and hail on the way to uni about 1030 this morning, then its just rained all damned day Edinburgh is in chaos. I'd advise anyone to stay clear of Cameron Toll area its chaos the drains are bursting everywhere its like a swimming pool and try to avoid coming up Minto Street and S Clerk Street because its just a torrent of water at the moment. It really was insane about an hour and a half ago, taken me 50 mins to get from Kings Buildings back to Newington the roads are backed up everywhere. Other than that you know, its been a bit wet today.
  10. Rain coming down in sheets now, wind picking up, the university weather station hasn't reported since 11.30am. Not pleased.
  11. Bit blustery in Edinburgh, dry and sunny though, so time will tell how bad this is going to get by tea time when I leave work...feels very humid though which is not nice EDIT:// getting windy now, Forth Road Bridge restrictions now in place: "RT @forthroadbridge High winds - Bridge closed to high-siders, cars with trailers, caravans, motorcycles & pedestrians #edintravel"
  12. Windy and blowy already outside. The train was swaying like mad between Helensburgh and Dumbarton while I was on my way back through to Edinburgh. Glad I got out at lunch time if its already enough to bring waves right up over the tracks god knows what its like tomorrow!
  13. Oh hells yeah! I bet Katla is just sat there waiting for her sister Katia to show up so they can go paint the town together - jkjk kids! The one thing that really don't get is where this theory about seismic activity around Katla being due to hydrothermal activity. I gave it a quick google and couldn't find much on it (or in general) that made much sense to me - someone wanna hook a sister up with some info?
  14. Sorry! Didn't mean to - I switched on the heating last night and broke the planet it appears. In other news its rather windy here in Edinburgh,
  15. As a biologist I've got to say this is one of the most flawed studies I've ever seen in my life. Even first year undergrads could do better! How on earth did they even get this funded?!
  16. My Twitter stream just exploded. Friend in Baltimore is reporting feeling the quake strong enough for everyone to be evacuated from the office building and all the phone line are down. Another friend in Brooklyn felt it as well with it strong enough to throw a mirror off the wall and even my sister in Toronto just called me to tell me they had a quake all within about 3 mins of each other.
  17. Brilliant - I'm wondering if I should pre-empt and get the flooding towels out the cupboard.
  18. I can't see fek all I live in a basement, though I did get woken up by it. I was napping like a good student then all of a sudden massive crack of thunder. I literally threw my self out of bed and missed the wall. Tried to look out the back door but the lighting seems to be in the other direction.
  19. Thunderstorm in Edinburgh (again) flatshaking loud thunder. Its been a long time since I've heard thunder that cracks and not rumbling for ages.
  20. Its okay, the only thing that was wrecked was the door the waters has wrecked the bottom lock but its easy enough to fix. Not much rain today everything missed us thank God!
  21. Okay so as you know my kitchen narrowly avoided flooding yesterday during the downpour. I caught the first storm on video and the rain that accompanied it. The second was heavier but we were too busy you know, trying to save the flat to get videos and stuff. Warning this video has got swearie words in it so if you arn't adult enough to deal with my two flatmates and I bouncing around and the odd f and s bomb then don't watch. Enjoy the rapture rain. And yes my flatmates and I talk a lot. Deal with it. http://youtu.be/2ejNwzhh-_4
  22. There were reports of a funnel cloud with the storm as well at about 2.30 though if it was that cell or the cell before it I'm not sure. It does look VERY American in structure.
  23. Awww crap. The flooding here is bad enough. We've already come within a baw hair of loosing the kitchen...the water still hasn't gone down outside the ground just can't take it any more. We've had a months worth of rain in within 6 hours over the last 2 days. Even a wee shower here is going to flood everything. Time to go up the road and get some sandbags me thinks.
  24. I must be the only one hoping nothing happens. Still inches of standing water in places and with the rain over the last two days I seriously don't think the Edinburgh area can take anything more without there being more widespread flooding than has happened in the last two days. I would have been more than happy with one storm for the year but this is taking the micky, seriously storms other people deserve to enjoy you!
