  1. I'll take some icy pics for the NW Scotland forum posse I'm taking my two daughters for a skate on the lake (great photo opportunity) - because I maybe an old man by the time the next big freeze comes along.
  2. Well, they can stick their limp-wristed health and safety fears over the Grand Match - I'm going for an ice skate on Lake of Menteith tomorrow. The last time the lake was this frozen was 30 years ago! Anyone see the great footage on BBC Scotland news this evening? Once-in-a-generation chance to hold the Grand Match and the doo-gooders wring their hands then tell us what they think is good for us. Well, not this Scotsman....
  3. Can't believe the Grand Match has been called off. Are we regressing as a nation? What is so different from 30 years ago when the last one was held? Sign a waiver form, if need be, that you won't sue anyone if you break a leg or fall through the ice before taking part in the event.... humbug!!!
  4. Yes, a bonspeil on Loch Leven last happened in 1959 so it would be great to get the old ice skates on and go for a skate. http://ssa.nls.uk/film.cfm?fid=5489 And these pics are worth a little look... the sea freezing over.... http://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2942&p=17708
  5. Yup, it's winter y'all in the U S of A. Darn, is that another snowstorm Scooter?
  6. Just had a little snow flurry out Rutherglen way. Fingers crossed for more.
  7. Just a reminder to all you nowcasters out there that this site is most useful.... (and it's free!!!!).... www.raintoday.co.uk/ Especially handy to keep an eye on that fast approaching band from Down Sowf.
  8. Morning all! Well that was a right damp squib last night. Mushy and rainy here. At least we didn't shut hundreds of schools, stay off work and close one of the world's busiest airports because of a few cms of snow! It seems our winter weather-fearing neighbours are a bit of a laughing stock this morning. Here's hoping there is some kind of return to colder air as the day progresses; seems it might be possible.
  9. Big lumps of the white stuff again. So am I right to guess that the main event is still to come this evening some time?
  10. Nice one Glasgow-Guy. Just wait till the 'main event' hits us tonight
  11. Glasgow-Guy, I'm up in Burnside and getting what you're getting. A good dumping every ten minutes....
  12. Some good snow here now - not extreme yet though
  13. Think we'll all just have to wait this one out another day before we see any white stuff.
  14. Way to go, Hiya!!! Nice one. Long may your snow grains be extreme
  15. Ha! Anyway, anyone in Scotland actually got any snow? Even a light dusting? Heck, one snowflake would be good to hear about.
  16. I love this.... an 'extreme' snow event. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7863900.stm I work with a guy who as a kid used to go to school cross country on skis some winters (from the Ballater area). Now that's the kind of snow we want:)
  17. Exactly Sammie! I'll stick my neck out and suggest that the reason it's getting such wide publicity as a 'major' event is because it's currently happening in regions which have forgotten that these weather events do actually happen in the British Isles. Gritters on the roads, flurries of snow, Arctic blasts, blizzards, minus temperatures - this is what happens in winter. It's the mincing hysteria in some quarters that I struggle to comprehend. I love a big snow event like everyone else (there's a child in us all) but there needs to be a sense of proportion about these 'extreme' and 'severe' snow events. Okay, off to get my sledge from the attic! It's getting colder outside.....woohoo.
  18. Yes, it's all a bit worrying when the BBC uses words like 'extreme' and 'severe' in relation to some snow, when the reality is that we live on an island on the edge of the Atlantic and can expect snow, ice, frost and gales as a matter of course during our winter months. 'Extreme' to me would mean lying snow depths of around two to three feet. That would be pretty extreme. 'Severe' would be temperatures down to -20C or more, not the BBC's overnight -2C that its getting uptight about on its news website. Anyway, I suppose it's all relative. If you've hardly seen snow from one winter to the next then any snow event is bound to be 'extreme'. Right, bring on the snow....
  19. There's the odd very light flurry, blowing in the wind.
  20. It's not so much the car - but how you drive in snow that's the trick from getting from A to B. I've seen an awful lot of cars come off snowy roads because the drivers weren't adjusting their driving habits to the conditions. If you're not used to driving in snow I'd stay at home
  21. I too fully expect to awaken to a complete whiteout tomorrow. Still falling very lightly here but it has been dry all day and the prospect of it settling looks fairly good now.
  22. Light snow. 0C @ 9.34pm Dry and snow-free all day until now.
  23. Just started to snow here on the south side of Glasgow. Could settle too as ground is dry. Fingers crossed.
  24. I think it is the last snow for most of us this winter - purely because most of 'us' live south of Hardian's Wall. I fully expect Scotland and parts of Wales to still get a good dusting in places now and again over the coming month or so. We can all live in hope though.
  25. Wrong Strato (IMO). That's a bit of a dizzy tangent. If you read my words again properly you'll see that what you really should have said is that it's hard to vote Lib Dem because we don't know who they are, or it's hard to support Bury because we can't find their ground, or it's hard to appreciate the merits of Hardy alongside JK Rowling because no one prints Hardy. The volume/quantity/deluge of govenment-backed/sponsored pro-GW info is vast. So it's no wonder that people can rhyme off a whole load of clever sounding pro-GW 'facts' - it's being drip fed to them Big Brother-style day in day out. But when it comes to other possible explanations for an Earthly increase in temp then other options or viewpoints don't get a look in. Pro-GW posters generally state lots of 'facts', tend to deride anyone with enough audacity to question their ideology and usually 'shout' the loudest. I've said it before, if you repeat something for long enough it becomes fact/gospel. Again, that's a dogmatic approach to science and not really a healthy one - I'm sure you'll agree. Who says we all have to form a b&w opinion on why the Earth is a tad warmer than it used to be at the moment. As is often said: “An open mind leaves a chance for someone to drop a worthwhile thought in it”
