Dami Yeah definitely.. just occurred to me as i was ordering the air con unit.

All up and running now, minus the window kit i need, which is due today.

Early tests are positive and i look forward to giving it a good run when the weather warms up.

So draining when you have days or weeks of endless heat, this is going to be a lifesaver!

*Stormforce~beka* I got one of these.

I ordinarily would faff about trying to make something like an air cooler work but i just don't think they cut it - i want the air chilled even when its hot.

Never had air con at home but so far am impressed. The noise isn't as bad as i expected, takes down the temp by a few degrees pretty quickly so it feels fresh more or less straight away.

Downside is the pipe length, bit short for my setup but not a big deal.

Overall, i can go into the summer months without a sense of dread of months of misery.

This room gets hot quickly and stays that way, some respite will be much appreciated when its hot!

I wouldn't call myself a heat hater but I defo find it uncomfortable sometimes more so when the humidity is high but this year has been great for heat haters so far, not so good for people who like it (check out the moans thread for proof) 🤣

lottiekent i've just come here to find this thread (used to be on previous years with a different username).

It's almost time. I think the aircon may be putting an an appearance by the end of next week. Which reminds me I must run it through a cleaning cycle.

I seem to have swung about quite a bit regarding summer heat. In my childhood I thought I was a heat hater, but really it was my mother who struggled with the heat and I was quite alright in it as long as I didn't stand out in strong sunshine without a hat for too long. I used to have a twisted memory of spending most of the hot and sunny August of 1995 indoors playing Doom, but when I checked my diary entries for that month I actually spent a somewhat above-average percentage of the month having outdoor trips and only occasionally did it get too hot for me. Once I recognised this I went through a long phase where I generally welcomed summer hot spells, through the 2000s and a large part of the 2010s. For example I have very fond memories of July 2006, July 2013, and a large part of summer 2018.

In recent times though a large part of me has started to dread the summer hot spells again. I generally cope fine with the outdoor temperatures, but the big problem is keeping cool indoors. Often the main problem is that hot synoptic setups tend to be warmer by both day and night than they used to be, and it is especially the higher minima in these spells that make cooling down difficult. In the past, hot summer months tended to have a much greater positive temperature anomaly by day than by night (again August 1995 and July 2006 spring to mind here), which made it easier to keep houses tolerable by opening some windows at night.

As such, I wouldn't call myself a heat hater overall but there are parts of me that lie on both sides of the proverbial fence and I find it easy to see where the full-on heat haters are coming from. I see this as one of the sad impacts of climate change: it is getting harder to have a spell of hot and sunny weather without it getting really hot. Temperatures well into the 30s Celsius excited me when they were rare, but it's a different matter when they become quite common events.

I don't yet have a home air con system but especially with having recently become a home owner the temptation to invest in one is growing with each year, at least for two of the rooms (living room and bedroom).

Hoping I don't make an appearance here often this summer, the first half of June has been blissful. I wouldn't be surprised if the warmth next week stretches right into July and we get yet another prolonged heatwave.

Thundery wintry showers growing up and on into my early 30s i was a lover of heat in summer and cold and snow in the winter... 2006 was the start of me disliking the heat quite a muggy oppressive month which i did not like..then came the hot spell of late June 2009 when i was stuck in a small apartment in London with no A/C ..It just became a furnace for those few days ..spent the rest of the summer praying the heat did not return...every since then im not fan of the heat and im thankful my house is fully airconditioned (i couldn't live with out A/C now)..in the winter i don't mind the cold but cannot stand snow.

*Stormforce~beka* Just a basic portable AC from eBay I bought for around £200, 10K BTU single hose. Bought it last summer after the infamous Summer 2022, at that point I knew I couldn't handle it anymore and I had to give in. Haven't used it since September, it did the job pretty well. Turned it on for an hour before sleeping, worth every penny.

*Stormforce~beka* Reminds me of 19 July 2022 in Lincoln when I managed to keep my living room down to a maximum of 31.4C - and I certainly didn't do that by opening the windows during the daytime when it was 40C outside! I remember I prepared for that heatwave in advance by keeping several of my windows open overnight for the preceding four nights and then shutting them from mid-morning.

lassie23 Interesting that you quote 23C as that's a fraction of a degree down on the July & August average maximum for London. I doubt that it's even possible to sustain a continuous run of below-average daytime temperatures in summer throughout July & August these days - you might just about manage it in one of the months, like happened in July 1988, but that was an exceptionally unsettled, low pressure dominated month.

Certainly in the current climate I am grateful for not living in the central part of a big city, especially London - I imagine the warm nights in central London with the urban heat island effect as well as it being the hottest part of the country in summer will be tough going at times.

*Stormforce~beka*  Mine's a German Trotec twin hose portable. It's 8 years old now, It doesn't get used in cooling mode until the indoor temperature goes above 24ºC as i'm mindful of it's longevity. Twin hose units are super rare on 230V. I use it in fan mode alot, in conjuction with a fan on the window ledge drawing in the cool evening air to it. Having a modern sash window with insect screen helps so much.

I want fitted a/c but in a late Edwardian terrace it's difficult, expensive and unsightly. I'm somewhat mindful of the outdoor condensor noise too. Considering 3 units indoors (2 bedrooms and the lounge). Portables (aside frome efficiency) all have an issue of self-destructing themselves over time if they are not kept clean. Dust build up on the hot part (condensor) will raise the pressure in that too much and overheat the compressor, dust on the cold part can cause the evaporator to freeze which can flood liquid refridgerant back to the compressor and weaken it that way. Before season, I dismantle it and clean the coils. Carefully. Filters usually twice a month.

Schnee Wow your good! I am not knowledgeable at all. I hadn't thought of the noise. Do you need a box outside every single bedroom window then? I'm in a terraced so might pee the neighbours off! I dunno what to do tbh! I really need to research more

*Stormforce~beka* One outdoor box can run several inside units but each one will need it's own set of lines to the outside unit. Said outside unit used fully will have the same, or a higher power consumption as an electric shower going by what i've been looking at on HVAC supplier sites.

The noise itself is a hum, similar noise as to a portable with a more subtle fan noise. It'd be noticed by people with good hearing at night. Also, I've heard of noise from vibration too if the outdoor unit isn't installed quite so well.

The large whole house units America use are louder than split system units we would likely have fitted here.

When you play, the cooling should be adequate.

I recently installed a split system and it wasn't as expensive or complicated as I thought it would be. btw, How often do you clean the filters?

I dread the summer every year. ever since I was born we've always had really boiling hot heatwaves every summer in the 80's, usually on average from memory about three each year. I remember sports day when I was a child being ridiculously hot, trousers sticking to me, feeling sick and light headed with it all.

I've been keeping an eye of the European heatwaves and hoping and praying it stays away from the uk. I absolutely despise the disgusting, sweltering, stinking, putrid, sickening heat. 🤮 It's not welcome in my house. 👎

The heat haters should take solace in the fact that next weeks heat looks fleeting at best, especially further west.
