poleup I really need to get a split system installed. It becomes a gamble of leaving the hose bracket in the window or pulling it back in when thunderstorms are predicted with my portable. They’ve already had duck tape treatment as the plastic is becoming brittle. Eventually the plastic tabs will break off.

I clean the portable filters every 2 weeks to a month of use, depending on what type of heatwave approaches.

but this year has been great for heat haters so far, not so good for people who like it (check out the moans thread for proof) 🤣

It’s been a strange year, very warm spring but no real heat, the highest temperature so far this year has only been about 21°C here. But the spring has also been dull and wet, with a lot of the warmth at night rather than during the day, so it hasn’t felt as warm as the stats say.

Schnee Interesting! So would have to have wires running across the house to all the rooms. Sounds a pain!

Schnee Are the standalone units quite big?

*Stormforce~beka*Mini splits have 2 copper lines and a cable that goes to the outdoor unit. There's also a water drain from the indoor unit to outside. They're usually all encased inside a plastic housing. I think there's various methods the professionals use on connecting all the indoor units to the outdoor unit.

If I got it here, I think the installers could possibly run the front bedroom and living room lines through the wall into my room, up into the loft and down. I'd sit the outdoor unit on the back wall between my window and the bathroom.

Standalone units, you mean portables? They can be brought in different sizes and cooling capacities. Mine is fairly large, 12000BTU as I sized it with the heat from my ancient audio equipment and gaming rig (that turned into VR) in mind. Conveniently it sits infront of the window. It doesn't really drown out the TV or radio sound as I turn it to low once i've cooled down but it's a little much to sleep with it on without earplugs. Mini split systems are almost silent indoors.

At least this heat blast only appears to be lasting Monday & Tuesday next week (and possibly some of Wednesday before the rain turns up) and if it helps matters July doesn't appear to be starting on a good note (well it is Wimbledon fortnight where it usually rains at some point during those 2 weeks.)

I have my fan on all year round when I am sleeping, even during the winter. Unless it's a warm night then I don't have it pointing at me. I use it for the relaxing white noise that it makes. It also helps to filter out background noises.

MP-R The models still don't seem to have the timing of the breakdown pinned down completely.  Some are sticking to a Wednesday breakdown, but some seem to prefer a change on Thursday, with a bit of to-ing and fro-ing here and there.

S Bragg Yes, that's what I'm slightly worried about. Experience of the last decade or so has been that when hot weather is forecast, it is a) hotter than originally predicated, and b) lasts longer than originally predicted. Now I can cope with a couple of/ three hot days, but if this extends beyond that, and lasts for ages...that's when it becomes really challenging for me. I find that once the bricks and the roof heats up in the house, that retention makes it difficult for the house to cool down...then it becomes a real struggle for me.

I am very interested in installing 'proper' AC, but as we're about to go on the market soon and hope to move this year, I'm holding fire. I wonder if in the future, at least in the southern/ south-eastern segment of the UK, house-buyers will be as keen on AC as they are on heating...I know that I am!

Anyway. All you fellow heat-sufferers out there...hang tough for the next few days, and let's hope that it is indeed limited before we go back to something tolerable. We're entering the hardest part of the year now with July and August, but at least we've got through 22 days of the meteorological summer without anything too bad.

I’ve got a bad feeling about this, originally it was up to Wednesday now it’s Thursday but I know it’ll be longer and hotter than forecast. Seems so easy for it to get hot these days.

The models are bit all over the place at the moment so very inconsistent between runs. So a very warm to hot week coming up with some unpleasant near tropical nights on the forecast. The intense heat is kept away for now but wouldn't be surprised too see it arrive in July or August hopefully just briefly.

Unfortunately as soon any hot spell ends the politicians quickly forget about it. The Government seems to be stuck on the unsuitable heat pumps and doing very little to think about cooling in the summer.

Work is also another problem where people have min temperature they can work at but not a maximum.

When we were hitting 38C+ plus the walls of the house inside were warm to touch so like you say takes ages to cool the house down.

After last year's experience. I honestly feel that this year so far has been much better. Yes, it's been relatively warm recently. I think a lot of the problems actually originates from people who can't tolerate heat due to the high pollen count combined. After all, summer is the worst for people who suffer from pollen alergies. I also think it's the humidity that everyone hates; not so much the sunlight.

I belong to this club. 😂 Especially with high dew points. This week it is expected to rise to 20c with air temperature of 30c. So a little  bit of Bangkok in the Low Countries. Not my favourite type of weather, or later on the day thunder must occur.

Let's just hope the heat that is unquestionably threatened starting next week is just a few days and then it breaks down.  I'm not confident at all, even if the forecasts are downplaying it.

If we win it will have been a really good June and the first proper heatwave averted.

Then a heatwave free July please.  I hate July.  It's nearly always hell.

GFS reduces the unpleasant heat by day. Not long before it comes back though sadly.

22C in the shade here today. That is warm enough for me unless I am beside a pool with a cold beer!

Just to confirm. Is it going to be really hot starting tomorrow? Will there be any cool breeze or please... tell me it's not going to dry air... -_-

Today was an exercise day for me so I found it tough. But that was doing heavy excertion for two hours. Of course, doing nothing or very little 25 degrees is nothing. But riding the hills on hot roads wasn't comfortable at all. Makes you fitter though.

SakuraOwl I thinks it's going to be unpleasant for at least the next 3 days, possibly more.  Worse than today.  That's pretty much baked into the cake now.  The uncertainty starts around Thursday/Friday onwards.

Oh well, time to start hiding out here again... So far at the coast this year we have escaped, but we reached 24C yesterday afternoon before the sea breeze kicked in around 4pm and pulled temps back to 18C quite quickly.

This snip from the Bridlington temperatures yesterday shows just how effective the sea breeze is at moderating temperatures.

24C is very warm for our location, but its the overnight temperatures that I am not looking forwards to, as you get no respite from the sea breeze at night. Couple that with the current very high pollen count and the resulting hay fever and I will be wishing the cool down to come as quickly as possible.
