Sometimes i wish i lived in Shetland or Reykjavik 😂 I know 11-13 is a bit crud in mid summer but so is 20c at midnight. Slept terribly last night, tonight the fan will be on. Like many of you theres a lot of summer to go and the only perk for me is the long nights. I fear a protracted spell above 25c in the West Mids, with no sea breeze and an urban effect

mike57 Hello Mike, good to hear from you again, albeit I'm sure that both of us would prefer not to have to use this thread at all!

Not looking forward to the next few days, along with others on here. Hopefully short-lived, and back to something more reasonable afterwards, albeit that July and August are the most worrying months. Having said which, I spent 10 days at 30c+ (usually 35c, rising to an awful 38c) in Bucharest in the first half of the month...that was a struggle, to say the least! So we'll see how we go for the remainder of this week. It's quite cloudy here locally atm, which is a bit of a surprise, but the longer the blazing sun is obscured the better.

Hang in there, folks!

We all know the next few days are gonna be hot, thats a given. However the "end" seems to constantly change. One minute its thursday/friday and I look this morning and see heat for saturday and temperatures staying around the 22c mark for the forseeable.

Last night was so muggy, woke up dripping at 1 in the morning.

Air con is coming out later today I think.

G67bbx Yes, and that's what worries me...from past experience, when the end date keeps getting pushed back, it has sometimes indicated a not just a longer lived but also a much more intense events. I struggled with sleep last night too, and with no aircon at home that isn't going to get any better... 😞

SollyOlly At the moment Thursday is looking like the hottest day here (25C), with a cooling down Friday and over the weekend. Winds are forecast to increase in strength from the SW on Thursday, and given our location strong SW winds are our worst scenario, as they overcome the tendancy for onshore breezes to develop during the afternoon, which normally moderate the temperatures.

It brings back memories of 2022, we reached 29C here, the highest temp in the 18 years we have lived here, and that temperature was acheived because of an almost gale force SW. It was like someone had left the doors to Hell open.

I also struggle with the '1.5C' global warming, my guess is we are nearer 4C in the UK since the 1960s. Based on max temp during 1976 heatwave which was 35.9C and the fact that most summers we now see 34-36C somewhere. Equally winter snow is now a rarity. Even in London during the 1960s 30C was not reached every year.

I do think heat migration will start to affect where people choose to live. Not everyone has a choice, but amongst those that do lack of summer heat will be one of the decisions. When we decided to move to this area from the Vale of York back in about 2002 the full scale of warming was only just starting to show itself, and we finally moved in 2006, at the time we didn't consider the climate of the location, but were fortunate in selecting a fairly cool spot. If we were moving again (which we wont be) then it would be a consideration as we are both heat haters.

Looking at the model output this morning, we seem to be backing more into a westerly regime as the week goes on thankfully. Don't mind it being warm (say up to 22C) but for me it doesn't need to be hot, as hot weather is not "usable weather" as I call it.

I am moving house for the third time in a year tomorrow - final destination thankfully.

But why oh why has fate decided I'm moving on the hottest day of the year? It's going to be hell!!😭

mike57 A most informative post, thank you. As you know, I regularly visit the North Yorkshire coast and moors, and have done so since I was a boy in the 1950s. A couple of points. The 1960s were called a 'mini-ice age' - the BBC Winterwatch scenes at Fylingdales in 1963 and the decision by my parents to abandon family summer holidays on the NY coast in the mid-1960s because of the *** * weather confirm this for me. I was not present in NY during the summer of 1976 nor was I there in July 2022, but one of my two hottest days there was 9th August 2003 when the temperature reached goodness-knows-what (the other was July 2018). Having said that, I agree with much of what you say and will be interested to see what is happening with the weather on the NY coast when I arrive tomorrow afternoon. Surely not the dreaded fret?!

Given a choice between heat making hay fever symptons worse or sea fret I am afraid I will vote for sea fret, may not be a popular choice but over the last 10 years I have been just hoping to get through the summer with a minimum of impact. Hay fever seems to get worse each year, 30 years ago it didnt seem as bad, I dont know if its me or higher pollen counts because its hotter or more likely a combination of both. Heat starts earlier in the year, and ends later.

Fortunately sea breeze has kicked in earlier today, and is pegging temps back to just below 20C at home now. wind switched to light E about 1 hour ago.

A most unpleasant humidity here today, the sun is rather limited, but this is really not nice weather at all. I swear that 35c in Romania didn't feel as bad as this!

Just seen the latest forecast on the site this afternoon. The heat is forecast NOT to bugger off on thursday now as previously expected but now lasting even longer for us in the southeast until friday. What a surprise! 😡 Same pattern every. single. time. The southeast is the hottest place, gets it first and is the last for it to leave. All we need to complete the pattern now is the usual "Storms! Storms! Storms!" forecast that all miss us while the rest of the country gets lovely cooling rain and storms!

Put me down as a heat HATER for life!

Windblade It's supposed to be Thursday when we here in the midlands start to see the cooldown, but knowing our modern climate that will be delayed for us too.

This has felt like your standard British heatwave. No need for 30C, low to mid 20s is all you really need. Even then, it's quite hot. Wouldn't want it any warmer.

Frigid But if it did get significantly hotter, we'd all be ruined until it went away, which might be 20 days, each one feeling like a week.

Unpleasant enough today peaking at 26.2C despite the cloud. The lack of the breeze is the worst thing right now.

Paul_1978 Hoping it holds for the next runs.

I note that Thursday is forecast to be cooler than was predicted a few days ago (where I am anyway). Was around 24/25c now 20/21c across the board.

Paul_1978 Pleased to see it. Long may it continue!

Last few days haven't even been *that* hot in the scheme of things but it was pushing 25 degrees in the bedroom last night with little to no breeze to cool things down.

Of course, then you have the sound of every neighbour as if they've moved in to your house, the light night making sleep difficult. Throw in a heatwave and you're just in for a miserable time.

OTOH, got an aircon a couple of months ahead of time. Very grateful for that in my home office. South facing, can push 30+ easily on a warm day.

Has been on for 40 mins and is now 20.9 in here and 24.6 on the landing outside. The difference is stark and well worth the investment.

Costs wise, we average about £3.50 a day in electricity costs, running it all day yesterday cam to about £5.35 so just under £2 per day extra to keep cool. Wouldn't like to but would pay twice the price for that luxury.
