Reading about summer 84, which I have evidence and memories of being very dry in the Lake District, indeed one of the driest of the 20th century, however, it is rarely mentioned by many as a good summer. Not on the same level as 1983 or 1989, but here at least it was very dry, very sunny and often warm or very warm. Perhaps it isn't mentioned as only the NW saw very dry weather? Any stats to back this up?

There was a serious drought situation here after a very dry spring, comparable to 1995 I think.

Summer rainfall:

England and Wales: 128mm, 14th driest

South east England: 92.5mm, 11th driest

North west England: 144mm, 7th driest

Summer CET at 16.3C, just about into the top 50. Average June, July, quite a warm August.

Looks like some stuff on 1984 already as well.

Summer 1984 was consistently good in the sense that all three months were warm, dry and sunny but none were spectacular.

There was little in the way of extreme hot weather (I think the absolute max was around 33C at the end of July) but repeated spells of fine weather with temps in the mid 20s.

As already said, maybe it wasn’t a nationwide good summer but here in NW England it was a long dry period and although not competing in terms of temperature, probably the best summer overall here since 1976.

I remember Pennine reservoir levels being very low with a hosepipe ban across the region and in the Lake District there was plenty of tv coverage of the remains of Mardale appearing as the water levels of Hawswater dropped.

Thanks for the stats, as I thought a very dry summer here on the back of exceptional dry weather in the Spring.

Had a week's holiday in Cornwall in August 1984 and the weather was absolutely stunning with wall to wall sun every day and not a drop of rain !

We camped in North Yorkshire in late July 1984 for 10 days and, with the exception of one wet afternoon, we did not see any rain. Temperatures were however nothing to write about, just pleasantly warm, so our experiences probably support the stats for the summer of 1984.
