May 1915: Thunderstorms; Snow; Hail; Frosts; Heat......

May 1915 was a month with an enormous variety of weather.

On the 6th of May; a severe thunderstorm struck central London similar to the Hampstead storm of August 1975. A rain gauge on the Strand recorded 3 inches.

The following day a storm struck Leek depositing 1.75" of rain and hail in an hour.

 Oxford on the 13th recorded a maximum of just 6.7C; whilst Balmoral recorded a minimum of -6.7C.

A low pressure brought prolonged rainfall and in parts snowfall to the south on the 13th/14th

6 inches of snow fell at Upton Wold in the Cotswolds. Over the very highest parts of the Black Hills reports say about a foot or over layed after about 24 hours of continuous snowfalls. 2 inches of rain fell for parts of Hampshire.

It became drier after this spell [in the south there was no rain recorded after the 18th and temperatures rose with maxima reaching as high as 26C even as far north as Fort William and Gordon Castle in Scotland on the 24th.

The frosts returned at the end of the month as northerly winds flooded south. These frosts were damaging.

Rainfall was about average for England and Wales; although it was uneven distributed throughout the month. For Scotland and Ireland; it was a dry month.

One of the most interesting Mays of the 20th century with its variety of weather types.
