May 1952 was a very warm month with a CET of 13.4°C  It was at the time, the warmest May on record for Kew, Greenwich and Oxford.

The warmest spell of the month occurred around mid-month, Camden Square reached 30°C on the 18th

Thunderstorms broke out. 65mm fell in under 50 minutes at Cotleigh House near Honiton in Devon, 59.4mm fell at Kidlington in Oxfordshire.

At Tibshelf in Derbyshire a tornado struck causing damage.

Huddersfield mean temp:  54.5°F  (49.5°F May mean at the time)

Max: 82°F. Min: 60°F, 10.5hrs sunshine

18th May

Max: 81°F, Min: 60°F  7.3hrs sunshine

Was it 1952 which featured a southward-moving cold front which quite suddenly replaced warm easterlies with cold northerlies, with some very marked thundery activity along it (which may be the storms mentioned above)?

I remember reading about that when I was very much younger, back in the 1990s. I'm fairly sure it was 1952.

1952 has the strange versatility of a very warm spring but a very cold autumn.  From memory the first half of the summer was really decent as well. One of those years where everything falls apart in the second-half.
