Something which has interested me ever since seeing the chart for the Leap day Plume of February 1960 which @Weather-history brought up earlier this year is how such a warm airmass with 850s of 16-17C touching southern England hasn't been equalled yet until the second half of May. I've looked through various years, and so far still cannot find anything this warm until later May.

Only days that have gotten close:

Earliest date where such warm airmass has been equalled to end of February 1960 seems to be on the 14th May 1992, (16.2C on a Camborne ascent) then we see quite a few more instances into the second half of May which is to be expected.

One of the reasons I think this is the case is through spring, airmass transport weakens compared to winter where both cyclones and anticyclones are stronger due to larger temperature gradients, and so it's harder for warmth to be brought up into say mid spring until there's much warmer air to our south by late spring.

The Camborne maximum 850 hPa temperature ascents data since 1980 via RoostWeather also shows this nicely with not much of a sudden warmup on the 31-day mean until May

Makes you wonder how warm the equivalent extreme would be nowadays.

Some other extremes, but of the winter, that I found.

10C bathing much of southern England on the 5th of February, 1869:

And bathing much of England and Wales on the 27th of December, 1983:

As sobering as it may be I imagine we will probably witness the 15C in the next 30 years in the winter and as for the spring, well 20C can't be ruled out either!
