Trivia game: name the top ten hottest days ever on the 1st January 1990.

Fun trivia game I thought of where you have to name the top ten hottest days on record on the 1st January 1990 the reason I chose this date is because I think the 90s is where it really all started to change

one rule to the game is that there is no researching you just have to see if you have the knowledge.

some things to note:

my main guide for this was Trevor Harley’s website.

order is not really important because what I found there is about 4 days with the exact same temperature.

22nd July 1868 will not be included on this list because there is no confirmed temperature for that day so it’s basically all just speculation and just no dates before 1875 in general.

also something I found was that the number 10 spot is a tie so feel free to use either or just say 11.

good luck!

I've tried to base these on personal experience, so no research needed:

3rd August 1990 (Exmoor), 9th (not 10th) August 2003 (North Yorkshire), 25th July 2018 (NY), 17th and 18th July 2022 (South Cheshire)

Not sure what you mean by 'on the 1st January 1990', but prior to that:

26th, 27th and 28th June 1976 (Surrey)

Summerlover2006 apologies, my misunderstanding. So definitely 26th, 27th and 28th June 1976. There was a Saturday in July 1983 (16th?) which was very hot  I understand 1959 was a 'corker' but we were abroad for the whole of that year so I have no personal recollection of it.

Edit - I have a vague recollection of reference to 'hot Tuesday' in 1808 when there were mass fatalities of workers in the fields due to heat and sunstroke. No other details known.

1911 is going to feature as I recall when in August 1990 the record was broken, it broke the record from August 1911.

July 1923

September 1906 may even feature.

1. 36.7°C Raunds, Northamptonshire August 9th 1911 (generally accepted figure based on 35.7°C at Cambridge)

2. 36.1°C Halstead, Essex August 19th 1932 (generally accepted figure based on 35.6°C at Cambridge)

2. 36.0°C Epsom, Surrey July 22nd 1911 (extremely disparate with other stations, should not be accepted)

4. 35.9°C Cheltenham, Gloucestershire July 3rd 1976 (highest unambiguous on the list)

5. 35.7°C Cheltenham, Gloucestershire July 2nd 1976

5. 35.7°C Wisley, Surrey August 10th 1911 (extremely disparate with other stations, should not be accepted)

7. 35.6°C Southampton, Mayflower Park June 28th 1976 (disparate with other stations, doubtful)

7. 35.6°C Camden Square June 29th 1957 (Camden Square unreliable, should not be accepted)

7. 35.6°C Camden Square July 13th 1923 (Camden square unreliable and way out of line with other London stations on this day, should not be accepted)

7. 35.6°C Hesley Hall, South Yorkshire September 2nd 1906 (flimsy record but generally accepted for the sake of argument)

Unfortunately fahrenheit rounding makes the top 10 list at this point in history very boring.

Summerlover2006 thank you for posting and a pity in my view that discussion on a fun topic seems to have been ended prematurely. Brazell's book on London Weather has 22nd July 1868 down as 96.6F max, and presumably this must have come from somewhere and must rank in the top ten on a par with June 1976. I wonder where July 1808 would have ranked if it had been an official figure. I recall reading somewhere that the magic100F was reached that month, although presumably that could not be regarded now as authentic based on modern methods of measurement.

Summerlover2006 Difficult. I'd probably use 1st Dec 1988 as my cut-off point though, rather than 1st Jan 1990, as that seemed to be when the "predominantly mild/warm" pattern of the late 80s, 90s and early 00s kicked in.

Will struggle with exact days, but let's say four of them occurred in late June / early July 1976. Let's then say three occurred in July 1911 and two occurred in August 1947. The balance in, I don't know, summer 1933.

(EDIT: for clarity I posted this before reading the above. It does appear I was right with 1976 and 1911 though, albeit not 1947 or 1933. I picked Aug 1947 as I noticed Southampton had a very high mean max of 26C for that month, very high indeed for the time).

Ignoring the above detail (as with Summer8906), I recall sweltering in the heat one day shortly before we went overseas to a country where you always sweltered, and this must have been the summer of 1957. By all accounts, the summer of 1911, mentioned by Summer8906, was so hot that it led to considerable industrial unrest, and so is certainly a contender for the top ten.
