Day  one plus one

Took a leisurely drive down to Plainview where we ate lunch at a Braums.  We then moved a bit further south West and spent the afternoon watching a few huge supercell storms.  Sadly no tornadoes today but this disappointment was soon forgotten when we located the place where the storm dumped its load of extremely large hail.  Most people sensibly avoided getting there cars destroyed by the hail some of which was 5 inches.

Tour 3 - Day 1 (West Texas)

On the changeover day we headed South from Denver and overnighted in Dumas, TX at the lovely Red Roof Inn. Day 1 was a West Texas chase down in the oilfields of Texas. Supercells with large to very large hail, strong winds and tornadoes were all possible. Drove down to Plainview for lunch and a Tornado Watch was issued.

We got on a couple of supercells that went severe quickly with extremely large hail - one of which was warned as having 5 inch DVD-sized hail. The storm briefly looked like it may produce a tornado but then became a big hail monster, dropping 5 inch stones. Pics below of some of the challengers. The one in my hand, felt seriously heavy - not something to get on your car.

Ended the day in Lubbock, TX.

Mike.

Tour 3 - Day 2 (Eastern Colorado)

I hope you all like a good lightning shot, because Day 2 did not disappoint at all! We drove all the way back North to Eastern Colorado via Dumas for the second time, and headed up to the Springfield & Lamar, CO areas. Severe storms with the outside chance of a tornado or two were forecast with severe winds and severe hail. Storms fired west of Lamar, CO bang on schedule and gradually became severe as they moved East towards better moisture. As we backed away as the storms crept towards us, part of the storm went tornado-warned for Wiley, CO and one of the pictures below looks like a brief funnel cloud - with radar indicated rotation.

Then, the lightning went crazy, and I mean really crazy (pictures below!). Some of the CG's left trails after striking with gunshot thunder and positive bolts. We spent the next few hours doing lightning photography and it was just amazing. Checked into a hotel in Garden City, KS and got pizza for dinner as the storms rolled over the hotel.

An absolutely amazing day!

Mike.

Day 6   started the day in Ogalala,  Nebraska. Watched and waited to see what could be the best storm that could produce a tornado. We chose a storm that was heading to Burlington,  Kansas.  Whilst it was nice to watch and film it didn't produce a tornado.  Ended the day in Goodland, Kansas.  Early start in the morning.

Here are some photos from the day

Day 7    started the day in Goodland,  Kansas.  Travelled around 640 miles to put ourselves well within the target area. Our journey took us from Kansas through Oklahoma and into Texas.  The weather potential looked remarkably good and tornadoes, large hail and strong winds were on the menu but sadly it didn't happen. Every storm that blew up quickly evaporated. Ended the day just west of Oklahoma City.  A photo from yesterday.

Tour 3 - Day 3 (West TX)

Some additional pictures from Day 3, starting from Garden City, KS via Amarillo for lunch, and down towards the West Texas border with New Mexico for supercells late in the day with an isolated tornado threat, large hail and damaging winds. We got on a nice supercell initially which structured up, and then late in the day a tail-end charlie behind the main line of supercells gave us a lovely close funnel cloud. Ended the day in Lubbock, TX. Some pictures below.

Tour 3 - Day 4 (OK Panhandle & SW Kansas)

Started the day in Lubbock, TX and headed North for a small SLGT Risk in SE Colorado and OK Panhandle into SW Kansas. Coffee stop in Plainview, lunch in Cactus, TX and then out to watch storms West of Boise City, OK. Storms were gaining Special Weather Statements and the occasional Severe Thunderstorm Warning but never really got organised today. Lots of outflow, and a beautiful sunset to finish. Overnighted in Liberal, KS with a BBQ dinner, and overnight storms rolling over the hotel.

Day  8    started the day in Wetherford, Oklahoma and travelled down to Lawton, Oklahoma for lunch.  We then took a drive around the Wichita Mountains and drove up to the top of Mount Scott  2,400 ft high.

We then sat around waiting for storms to initiate, which they eventually did and our chase took us back to Lawton were we stopped the night.

Storm photos  from Vicky,  scenery from me.    Fish cloud from me .

Day 10   started the day in Amarillo,  we headed to Canadian where we ate dinner at a place called the Bucket,  it was packed as our arrival clashed with the end of a basketball tournament and there were over 50 kids waiting to eat.  We chased a few storms around and ended up sat under the anvil watching the mamattus clouds.  Finished the day in Liberal,  Kansas.  Photos courtesy of the team.
