Morning all . An absolute stunning November morning under the centre of Euro High across The Austrian Alps with only a bit of cirrus and very mild again , currently 17c in the valley. Just hope the gloom lfts for you guys over the coming weekend. Out of interest , my daughter who lives in Stockholm tells me of strong winds and heavy rain and hail with the passage of quite an active cold front during the past hour. Temp fell from 15c to 5 c in one hour !

October rainfall: 154mm

Above average, but I've had worse Octobers, did have a few frosty sunny days

Morning all. It seems we are heading towards one of the dullest years on record. We have a habit of breaking records all for the wrong reasons 😂

Already lost 150 hours of sun this year and two more months to go.

carinthianNot too gloomy in London today with rather high cloud and very mild temps. I'd rather have this than wind, rain and storms. The trees are so lovely this year because of the lack of strong winds. Long may it last.

I hear you, mate, I TRULY hear you. It's also very bad for the health, causing all sort of problems, from arthritis to lung problems to skin complaints such as eczema. The Nobel Prize winner V. S. Naipaul (born in Trinidad) said that his sojourn in Wiltshire when he was in middle age totally ruined his health; he was staying in a very damp cottage at the bottom of a valley. Yuk.

SunnyG This time two years ago my boiler broke, and I lived in a small, damp Edinburgh flat. It took the December 2022 spell for the egregious letting agents I was renting through to provide us with temporary heaters. The flat was disgustingly mouldy and freezing cold. The problem eventually got fixed before Christmas but my flatmates and I developed numerous health complications (I was battling eczema at the time which got infected) and to a minor extent I'm still suffering today.

As energy prices are so high many people will likely suffer through poor living conditions again this winter.

Relativistic Yes this country has a disastrous combination of appalling climate and near-Dickensian housing (for those who can't afford to spend £££££££). Hopefully the winter will be mild or at least dry 😉

Could easily mistake this Europe chart for being for the 8th of September or even August. Remarkable spell coming up. Something does tell me though that such a large expanse is not immune to retrogression if we’re very lucky. Conversely if it sticks around and the jet fires up then I’d fear Nov/Dec 2015 blown out the park.

Looks like 2024 is turning into a 1974 “joker”style year where the colder months generally bring very mild synoptics but the summer months are relatively cool. Historically not incredibly unusual an occurrence, but now the warm anomalies have extra oomph to them.

Wonder what later November and December will do. All’s generally playing in line with my idea earlier in the year that 2024 seemingly delivers the worst possible results.

Relativistic Something similar happened to me in January 2023. Amidst the cold spell mid month, my power went out. It took a week for it to be repaired but in that time the house turned into an ice block. Room temperature was around 8C in my loft bedroom IIRC. Incredibly cold. Boiler no power, no warm water for a week. I usually love cold weather but in this instance it felt like a curse.

Very boring forecast but a high of 19°C forecast next Friday??? Would probably be a local record if it came off.

Just thinking how this current dry yet cloudy high pressure spell compares to our normal Autumn seasonal weather. So should we be expecting frosts at night? Just looking at Sheffield Met Office climate data and October has an average of 0.2 frosts (91-2020) and was 0.3 f61-90) and November just over 2 frost events (91-2020) compared to just over 3 (61-90) so in terms of averages frost is not that common for this location in Autumn.

Even with the next couple of weeks looking dry, cloudy with light wind I will gladly take this weather as opposed to wind and rain.

Turned into a predominantly sunny afternoon here. Looks like the north-east quadrant of England has gotten fairly lucky.

Also noticeable is the massive area of stratocumulus spanning all the way from Poland to France (unsurprisingly in no hurry to shift under the weak November sun).

Alderc 2.0 The same story here, only temperatures are a few degrees cooler!

Start of July:

Although personally I would consider temperatures in the high teens to be summer rather than Autumn. Autumn I would consider to be around 9-16°C.

October rating for me is about a 5/10. Not particularly great, but could have been worse, and is an improvement to recent Octobers as it was a little drier and calmer, particularly final 10 days. Ended with 88.3 hours of sun, (87% of the average) which isn't great but again could have been worse.

Maybe for other parts of the country but 17-19C maxes in Bournemouth are late spring and October maxes not July.
