TonyH Amazed with all those lows coming in at low latitudes until around the 21st, which one might think would make Wales wet!

Maybe it was because the wind was more southerly and less westerly, which would mean that the air was dried out by the time it reached Capel Curig.

Here, by contrast, straight westerlies are often better in the winter months than anything with a southerly component, for similar reasons.

Summer8906 October was overall average in both rain and sunshine for my area. It may have been very wet for you locally due to geographical features that wouldn’t be reflected on Met maps. October is wierd both SE and NW duller than average while NE areas sunnier than average and SW and Midlands near average.

TonyH the value markers for averages…. For example the percentage for rain jumps from 75% to 125% and for sunshine it goes from 90% to 110%…

Mapantz Indeed, remember  solar noon is very early this time of year which means this should be the brightest time of the day. Instead it feels like 8am or even 4pm.

Catbrainz they largely base those maps on NRW gauge network, they have been pulled up about a few of these playing up!

TwisterGirl81 Well I guess they have to draw the lines somewhere.

TwisterGirl81 Id make white for rainfall between 90-110% myself no idea why white is such a large range. 90-110% being white for sunshine is okay for me though that’s the overall range where a month feels pretty normal to me.

I guess we could have more colors for more precise maps like 95-100% sunshine a light sliver-off white,100-105% a very pale cream etc

TonyH that’d explain why sometimes rainfall readings seem off for certain local areas.

Catbrainz Victoria Park Swansea over did it a lot until I mentioned to Derek who got them to go out and fix it, one near here sometimes over does it too, 99% seem spot on though.

Catbrainz of course keeping it dumbed down for general consumption.

Summer8906 What we need for decent sunshine levels in the colder months is a zonal Wly or NWly flow. They tend to being a fair amount of sunshine even if cyclonic, anticyclonic conditions often become very dull in the Nov-Jan period.

Different weather in the eastern half of Scotland. Even during harsh winter conditions the sun is never far away.

This is the sort of stupid climate where high pressure = moisture trapped at low levels = overcast

Here is chart for last 3 days (1-3 Nov) showing rainfall with a reasonably

strong anticyclone dictating (or not) the gloomy weather.

If you do move, bring a jumper as it can get nippy. Feb 2021

IanT The former is to be expected... I wouldn't however expect such persistent grey blandness from a chart like this:

Just imagine what a spell of weather this would be in summer, or even up to a month or so ago!

Flying in, can confirm the sun does exist above the Stratus layer! Although on the ground I can understand why you might not get that!

In Absence of True Seasons Could so do with a change soon. I think the cloudiest start to November I can remember. There could, though, have been some starts to past November’s that were just as bad that I’ve forgotten.

I’d probably say January and June this year were reasonable enough for some sunny weather, albeit varying from region to region, but I think this will no doubt become one of the greyiest years recently.
