Following on from the most above average months thread which @Summerlover2006 started recently, thought I would do the opposite, first the whole series, then also with a more recent time series (since 1878 and then again since 1945).

Coldest months in the whole CET series and anomaly against the 1961-90 average:

January 1795: -3.1C  (-6.9C(Coldest month in the series and largest anomaly)

February 1947: -1.9C  (-5.7C)

March 1674: 1.0C  (-4.7C)

April 1701: 4.0C  (-3.9C)

May 1698: 8.5C  (-2.6C)

June 1675: 11.5C  (-2.7C)

July 1816: 13.4C  (-2.6C)

August 1912: 12.9C  (-2.9C)

September 1674: 10.5C  (-3.1C)

October 1740: 5.3C  (-5.2C)

November 1782: 2.3C  (-4.1C)

December 1880: -0.8C  (-5.3C)

2 months 20th century, 2 19th century, 4 18th century and 4 in the 17th century since 1659

Average of the above = 5.36C (coldest year is 1740 at 6.86C)

Coldest CET months since 1878 and anomaly against the 1961-90 average:

January 1963: -2.1C  (-5.9C)  (Coldest month since 1878)

February 1947: -1.9C  (-5.7C)

March 1883: 1.9C (-3.8C)

April 1917: 5.4C  (-2.5C)

May 1885, 1879 and 1902: 8.9C  (-2.2C)

June 1972: 11.8C  (-2.3C)

July 1879: 13.6C  (-2.4C)

August 1912: 12.9C  (-2.9C)

September 1952: 10.7C  (-2.9C)

October 1896: 6.9C  (-3.6C)

November 1915: 2.8C  (-3.6C)

December 1880: -0.8C  (-5.3C)

0 in the 21st century, 7 in 20th century, 5 months between 1878 to 1899.

Average of the above for a year = 5.84C

Coldest CET months more recently (since 1945), anomaly against the 1961-90 average and difference against the absolute coldest month in the CET series:

January 1963: -2.1C  (-5.9C)         (Difference = 1.0C)

February 1947: -1.9C  (-5.7C)       (Difference = 0.0C)

March 2013: 2.8C  (-2.9C)           (Difference = 1.8C)

April 1986: 5.8C  (-2.1C)               (Difference = 1.8C)

May 1996: 9.1C  (-2.0C)                (Difference =  0.6C)

June 1972: 11.8C  (-2.3C)             (Difference = 0.3C)

July 1965: 14.0C  (-2.0C)               (Difference = 0.6C)

August 1956: 13.5C  (-2.3C)         (Difference = 0.6C)

September 1952: 10.7C  (-2.9C)    (Difference = 0.2C)

October 1974/1992: 7.7C  (-2.8C)  (Difference = 2.4C) Largest difference

November 1985: 3.8C  (-2.6C)     (Difference = 1.8C)

December 2010: -0.7C  (-5.2C)     (Difference = 0.1C)

2 months in the 21st century, 10 in 20th century after 1945

Average of the above for a year = 6.21C

Apart from March, April, October and November from the above list, a lot of the coldest months after 1945 weren't that much colder than the all time coldest months in the CET series. We can still get very cold months, but it's becoming very rare now!

(Also a special mention to the more recent February of 1986 with a CET of -1.0C, yielding an anomaly of -4.7C, and only 0.9C warmer than February 1947) (Please correct if any errors)

Great post, thanks. Jan 1963 - who of a certain age can forget that memorable month?! July 1965 - a complete disaster for our family holiday in the NE of England and led mum to pull the plug on holidays in the NE and head to the south coast in 1966, and she was right as well. November 1985 - capped off a very bleak year weather-wise.
