Septembers these days often the driest and most settled conditions are in the first 2-3weeks then the last week or 2 become more unsettled, but are there many examples of the most settled conditions concentrated in the second half of the month?

SInce 2004 the only Septembers which are like this are 2008, 2011 and 2013:

Perhaps 2022 also to an extent: unsettled to about the 9th, then mostly settled until the 25th, then unsettled again at the end.

2008 which you mentioned is the classic one.

Perhaps 1983 and 1994 also to a degree: unsettled first three weeks and dry end.

2017 had little in the way of settled weather but I seem to remember the third week was relatively dry and fine before it became wet again in the 4th.

i dont know why but i struggle to remember Septembers weather-wise unlike most other months of the year..only ones i have any real recollections about are Sept 2006 due to it being a reboot of summer after the dull coolish August that preceded it and Sept 2016 due to the hot spell mid month and it being my last Sept i experienced in the UK ..i have no recollection of Sept 2008 for example.

September 2022 for recent times definitely. We had some exceptional heavy rain during the first half, the 8th especially was lethal some very bad flooding around here. The second half was much drier and settled but quite cool at times.

2019 was also a little unsettled in the first half but then had a glorious spell between the 18th-22nd although it turn a bit more unsettled come the end.

2011 was mostly unsettled but turned abnormally warm for the months close.

Other than that can’t really think for any others

Sep 2022... underrated month. Started fairly wet (exceptional torrential rain on the 4th) but very very warm, exceptionally so by night. Sometime during the 14th a cold front pushed through and for the next 2 weeks we had almost non stop sunshine, starting off a lot cooler than average which was quite refreshing (6c recorded on the 18th) but by the end of this period it turned warm with multiple days in the low-mid 20s. Then it turned unsettled again on the 27th to give a wet end to the month. But that settled sunny second half is something rarely seen in Sept.

Sep 2018 hasn't been mentioned. Maybe doesn't fit this thread but it was a reverse of almost all recent Septembers. Forgettable for most of the month, a cool and very wet couple of days around the 20th, then a beautiful sunny warm final week.

Sun Chaser I agree I thought September 2022 was underrated as well. Here it was the wettest September since 2000 however that was mainly down to a exceptionally wet day here on the 8th which brought some very severe local flooding and about virtually a whole months average rainfall in one day, aside from that though it was mainly dry and sunny. Had some good warmth in the first half, nothing too hot or too humid just very pleasantly warm. The second half again was generally very dry and sunny although we did have a couple of random warmer days thrown in as well we reached 21.C on the 21st we didn’t have too many cool days but the nights were noticeably chilly 2.C on the 24th.

September 2018 was decidedly average here there was a bit of heat at the start (I think northern Scotland fared especially well during that spell) but aside from that I don’t remember much, expect that very severe windy weather on the 18th and a chilly end.

September 1995 was a good example, especially in north-eastern Britain: extremely wet until the 10th with slow-moving low pressure areas and fronts, then a few days of sun and scattered showers and thunderstorms, then a much drier second half. Apart from a couple of cold showery north-westerlies in the last week, the second half was largely dominated by high pressure.

And indeed as others have mentioned, September 2008 sticks out, I vaguely recall the early part of the month being very wet where I was in Norwich.

I think September this year will go that way. It is indeed looking like things will be improving from later this week.

Weather Enthusiast91 September up here so far has been lovely throughout, notably chilly though the last few days and I’ve just recorded my first frost this morning, I think if it continues like this it will be a fantastic month if a little bit cold.

September 2008 comes to mind the most here. All of 2002’s rain came between the 05th-09th but it was a dry month overall. 2022 is a close call but it was unsettled again in the final week.

A dry month could well be on the cards, just a bit of rain expected Sunday but dry through next week, atlantic looks blocked.
