Alderc 2.0 It’s mad how far thunder can actually travel under the right conditions. I was hearing thunder the other week from Bury St Edmunds in Kings Lynn approx 40 miles or more away. Couldn’t even see the cell either due to cloud. It was surreal.

According to the Met Office, thunder is rarely heard from more than 20km away.

I happen to be on a train and you can practically guarantee when I get to my high viewing spot (ish) at home it'll decay rapidly. Or even before then.

Mapantz tell this storm that... and the others we've watched across the channel from the beach.

Alderc 2.0 Can confirm, I am sitting with Electricmumma and it is definitely very distant thunder, most likely to do with any channel-striking CG's. Audible thunder distance can vary greatly depending on atmospheric conditions, surface conditions, surface terrain etc.

Ooh!!!

i have development's to my south.

Edit: If it is a +Cg ,that sound would travel further than any other lightning strike because it would be louder.

Alderc 2.0 most definitely thunder, been doing this long enough. deep distant rolling thuds that you can feel in the ground.

ChatGPT disagrees. If true you’ve just heard thunder from a distance further than anyone else in the world by a factor of 3 or 4.

Just heard a very low frequency grumble from the southeast. It's dead quiet here so one can hear everything.

Possible these rumbles being heard in the south east could be from planes landing at Gatwick (passing Bexhill at 12000 feet). I've mistaken planes for rumbles before but I don't know, can't comment much otherwise as i'm not in the south east.

I'm probably closer to Gatwick and I never hear planes landing at Gatwick. It's likely thunder.

Might add that currently the storm is trekking one of the shorter parts of the channel as well.

In my experience, the sound of thunder carries exceptionally well over the sea. I've heard plenty of deep bassy booms from storms halfway across the channel. I don't know how far away in miles they've been though, but given how loud the positive strikes can be from that far away, I guess it's possible that tonight's ones could be heard from the Sussex coast already?

They are 40 miles away but I still think it's possible. It's not like there's anything in the way over the channel really.

The sound I  heard was very low...Sounded more as if the sound was coming from below the sea rather than above..I was outside on the patio when I heard it , was far too weak to be heard indoors.

This storm matches UKV 18z; which I can finally give some credit to today! On that run though it loses much of its oompf by landfall, and I note it's already beginning to weaken on both the radar and Blitz. Hopefully for you guys in the Eastbourne area it can keep chugging along

Metwatch There is a distinct difference between the regular, whooshing sounds of the overhead planes and the very deep thuds of distant elevated thunder!
