After quite a long gap, we finally have a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico which has made it to tropical storm status.

Expected to reach Hurricane strength within 24 hours and strike Louisiana as Cat1, or an outside chance of Cat2.

Heading roughly within proximity to Bay Saint Louis Mississippi… where we were March last year … bigger impacts on New Orleans to west on current track… 7-10ft storm surge in B st L

The lack of convection for a few hours and interaction with the Mexican coast has resulted in the windfield increase in size.

Convection is now popping up again.

This means the winds may not be as strong as feared, however, the rainfall totals will be higher. Louisiana has had 3 weeks of serious rainfall already, and the extra coming will be a serious problem.

 matty40s I think a lot now depends on the track forecast - very difficult to call. If it keeps trending further east it gets more time over water, more chance to strengthen and organise. But the higher end forecasts from a couple of days ago now seem quite unlikely - it's not even a hurricane yet so I don't think we're going to see a Cat 3 by landfall as some of the most aggressive output was showing.
