With the prospect of snow for highest tops of Highlands and Cairngorms in showers overnight and through tomorrow.

Good to hear of reports and any photos of snowfalls on our mountains before winter season kicks in.

Snowfall on the lakeland fells is a rarity before about mid October and rarely sticks until November. In some years it  takes until late November for the fells to have their first cover.

In the highlands snow is far more likely by late September in arctic blasts.

Just about possible to make out a covering at ~1100m on Cairn Gorm this morning. Possibly other parts of the Cairngorms to the west of there might’ve caught a bit more than this.

Well beyond the capabilities of my phone camera but, as above, there seemed to be a reasonable covering on the high Cairngorms from my vantage point on one of the Bennachie tops in Aberdeenshire this morning.

damianslaw  yes, it is somewhat of a surprise especially as the peak of that range is only around 900m

Last year the range had their first covering of snow on 17th October so we are 5 weeks ahead of 2023.

But it's only temporary. Hopefully we'll have a much colder and snowier winter this year 🙂

damianslaw over the years have  watched a few very early snowfalls which have been followed by months of no snow on the hills sometimes waiting  till  midwinter for visible falls.

I used to live in Clackmannanshire and loved it when you could see Ben Alder in the distance with its first snow hat on. Invariably it would remain until late May.

Snow beginning to fall at Cairn Gorm as a cold front moves south across north-east Scotland - a few hours later than originally forecast.
