This has been warned about for a few days now, the cold blast we are experiencing is part of an unusual set up which will drive a Low Pressure system up from the very warm and moist Mediterranean across a large area where it will get stuck.

It will happen from tommorow over the weekend and beyond.

Czech republic, Poland, Hungary are all letting large amounts of water down for last 2 days, trying to empty both reservoirs, but also polders and lakes with some control.

The Alps could see record early season snow, bit lower down could see more damaging flooding. Both the Pyrenees and Alps have had catastrophic damage caused by rock slides this year, as the permafrost high up is now so depleted, that degradation of rock faces has increased dramatically.

The area concerned is basically this..although river impacts could see problems outside this area.

Am travelling to the Istrian Peninsula, Northern Croatia for a week starting tomorrow. What chance this area will be severely impacted, as it looks to also cop a fair accumulation on some of the charts posted above?

It's a very interesting set up for a meteo nerd like me!

This is only day 1 in Slovenia

In Slovenia, it's been raining almost all day, according to forecasts, and there are local floods. This video shows perfectly how the element grows to such great proportions in just a few hours

Austria..

Already now, it is difficult to move between Radstadt and Obertauern due to heavy snowfall. Even in deeper valleys, the rain is turning into heavy snowfall

An area of low pressure stuck over SE Europe and associated stationary frontal system over parts of central and eastern Europe looks to bring a major flooding event to parts of Germany, Austria...

Red flood warning issued for the Danube in Bratislava, first time I've ever seen that in seven and a half years here. It's expected to crest on Monday; I reckon it will overflow on the south bank but the embankment on the north side should do its job. I expect the flood-prone Morava (tributary of the Danube) has already burst its banks.

We're actually lucky because the river was at a low level before all this rain began; had it been higher we'd be looking at something even worse.

Unfortunately, looking at the levels, rainfall and local footage, I think we will see disastrous happenings overnight and into the next few days. Lower Austria is particularly badly hit, Poland has dams being overtopped and beyond control.

I have seen footage of whole hillsides covered with running water, which will all descend to the major rivers. The Oder and Danube are most at risk.

Flood barriers now in place on the railway section next to the river channel . Vienna

More coming..

The incoming ICON with amounts of another 20-50 mm by tomorrow in the southeast of Germany, locally 90 mm near the Alps. The new GFS HD is the most aggressive with frequent 50-80 and >100 mm in Chiemgau. Lower Austria again almost catastrophic 200 mm!

I thought it would be Sunday when the BBC finally caught up. They did have a short article about the Romanian flooding yesterday..
