@Summerlover2006 As it turns out, there are three separate heatwaves in July 1994.

The first is a brief three-day affair in the first three days of the month that doesn't reach 30°C. The second is from the 10th to the 12th and in this brief heatwave, the maximum temperature of July 1994 is reached. The third one is twice as long, spanning the 20th thru the 25th and reaches 30°C on most days.

Which one should be nominated?

After Summerlover2006 has decided, the other two may be nominated as separate heatwaves if anyone wishes to do so. This applies to all years and months that had separate heatwaves - All heatwaves must be nominated separately: For instance, June/July 2018, mid July 2018 (which is a three-day affair so I doubt anyone wants to nominate this), late July 2018 and August 2018 are all eligible.

Sadly I have no data from 1477 😆 Would be fun to have modern-standard data going back 1000+ years though.

If we're talking about months as a whole, technically August 1995 was defeated by July 2006 nationally and again by July 2018 in England and worked out as below July 1983 anyway. In Scotland August 1995 is only joint-fourth with August 1997 and below Julys 2006 and 2013. Even August 1947 is still above 1995 in Scotland. In NI it was tied by July 2013. Sure August 1995 is a powerful heatwave but it's not undefeatable, it didn't even defeat July 1983 in England and the CET at the time.

In any case, we're not looking at the whole month here, only the heatwaves, which is why temporally distinct heatwaves that occurred in the same month must be nominated separately, and why something like June/July 1976 is nominated as one.

For those who want a month as dry as possible and as sunny as possible, August 1995 is defintely one of the best agreed, but for those who want it as hot as possible and for as long as possible (more the point of this thread), there are better candidates imo. July 2022/2006, August 2020/2003/1990, June-July 1976 one of the most notables ones. But a lot of those examples when compared to the rest of month, weren't as dry or sunny overall as Aug 1995 throughout, so I can imagine that's what makes 1995 one of the best for experience.

I'd love to enter 1683-84 into a coldest cold-wave of all time competition!

CryoraptorA303 I certainly think August 2020 shouldn't win anything! Too short and transient with unsettled weather either side.

Anyway, no-one's gone for August 1990 so far, so I'll enter that one. All the others I can remember seem to have gone, so for the other two I'll go with July 1911 and July 1921, both of which, at Southampton, had a mean max of above 25C.
