This comet became notorious for being  one of the biggest flops in astronomy because it was so hyped up.  It was expected to be a spectacular sight during the winter of 1973-74 but in the end it was barely visible to the naked eye and most people never even saw it,

The hype begins during the spring of 1973

The comet fails live up to the hype.

One little twist is that Lubos Kohoutek, the astronomer who discovered the comet early in 1973 died 50 years later almost to the day that the comet reached perihelion.
