Overall, I would give this September a 5/10. The middle third was nice but the first and last third was poor, although the synoptics were quite interesting. Notable weather events include the massive thunderstorm on the 21st and the "April Showers" on the 11th

Had the anticyclonic spell in the first week actually occured, then I would have given September an 8/10

1/10. There was not enough to redeem this appalling month, with 350% average rain, a cool spell, coldest this century, and sunshine around 65 percent average. Even some of the fine days were mostly cloudy while the south east had sun all day. A smattering of fine days was not enough to salvage this horror show. First time I've had to put the heating on in the first half of September this century.

Regarding your poll, it all depends on how you meant “ how do you rate from best to terrible” it all depends on one’s likening, wet, dry or sunny conditions….or even the overall prediction of this September and its outcome

For me any September is normally the most boring month of the year, but 2024,  it’s had everything, so as a September goes….its been the best ever 🤗

absolutely pathetic, no summer weather at all, and never known it so dark in the mornings at 6am, normally like fall back as it's lighter on a morning, but have a feeling it won't be this year

A reasonable month,  a warm and sunny start followed by a mixture of cold and fairly normal temperatures, had some cold sunny mornings which felt more accustomed to March or April than September. However the large amount of rainfall has certainly put a bit of a dampener on the month.

Rather cool, rather wet and rather dull here redeemed somewhat by the return of Summer mid month for 4 days.

8/10 as compared to many recent Septembers it felt like early autumn, with cool/colder spells alternating with warm summer like periods.  Just as a September should be IMO, albeit it was a bit too wet!

I have very much enjoyed this September. It has provided us with quite a variety including thunderstorms on the 21st and 26th. I usually find September to be one of the least interesting months of the year, but not this time round. The alternating warm and cool spells along with settled and unsettled spells made it feel like a transitional month, which is just how the month of September should be. Rather than identifying as a summer month.

I gave this September a 4/10. As others have noted it very much depends on preferences. In my case, through the whole of September (and October, for that matter) I am still looking for warm and dry weather, and this September has been pretty disappointing. It has had its moments, with a decent spell at the start and again mid-month, and the rainfall has been mainly focused on a few washout days. However, for me I don't really consider the northerly to be a plus - it's far too early in the season for me to like that sort of weather - it's like a northerly in April or May to me. All it really does is provide a lot of cold rain and miserable weather, and we get enough of that at any time of year.

I very much prefer my winter-like synoptics to be confined to the November to March period, when they actually are likely to produce some snow. The rest of the time, mild / warm all the way, providing no extreme heat.

Bit of everything Autumn has to offer, but rarely does so early in the season.

Copious amounts of rain especially in the last third, im a bit done with it now

Enjoyed it! A bit of a blast from the past, like the September's I remember, rather than a boring extension of summer. At least it has felt seasonally distinctive, which I've enjoyed. Roll on October...

7 out of 10 namely due to the variety. Usually find September the least interesting month, with a propensity for quiet benign warm weather or balmy southerlies or dank westerly/south westerlies. This year the atlantic has been quiet and instead we've had much more northerly and easterly influences. Indeed we've been spared the deluges others have experienced, those in Scotland and N Ireland probably feel the same about this September.

I went for a 6 out of 10. The weather was quite boring here though temperatures were pretty varied. It was quite dry but today saw a bit of a soaking.

We should do these every month and get a league table going, ha.

4/10

Yes there was some variety, and a few (albeit not many) warm dry sunny days, but there was simply too much rainfall and not enough sun for my liking. Such an early cold snap I didn't enjoy at all. Agree with pretty much everything you said @WYorksWeather

Still managed some brief t-storms, but if I had what some parts of Bedfordshire or Northants saw with much more potent thunderstorms, may have upped last month to a 5.5 at the highest. I posted the stats on the Autumn moans thread, but despite a mean temp almost identical to Sept 2020, it was a much worse September in my pov due to a lot more rainfall and less sunshine. i'd say last September was my least liked one of the decade so far. Perhaps I have gotten too comfortable with the prolonged dry and sunny conditions of previous Septembers, similarily the case with Aprils and Mays in recent years.

From a local/Lincoln perspective I've reluctantly downgraded it to just a 6. Around the 20th I was hoping to give the month at least an 8, due to its great variety, temperature contrasts, some fine dry sunny spells and a notable thunderstorm on the 11th, and prospects of more temperature contrasts in the last third of the month. There was some more distant lightning here on the evening of the 21st. Unfortunately the frequent dull and very wet weather in the last third of the month has brought it down.

7/10

Overall it was a cool, dry month with slightly above average sunshine. It did have a warm start but the second half was very cool indeed. Many days in the last week failed to reach 13.C and there was many cold nights. It was the coldest September here since 2012 but also the driest since 2015.

Notably I recorded my earliest air frost on record on the 13th where the minimum temperature fell to -0.8.C. This was also the coldest temperature of the month, there was also a minimum of -0.3.C on the 27th. The last earliest date for air frost was on 23rd September 2012.

However the month was generally very pleasant in this neck of the woods the first week was notably warm reaching a high of 24.2.C on the 6th however it turned much cooler from the 8th onwards and the rest of the month was generally cool, although temperatures did recover around the 15th-18th to slightly above average. The month did have a couple of unsettled spells but it was nothing too unusual for the time of year. It was a similar month to September 2012 as both had a rather warm and sunny first week before turning much cooler.

Overall the best September here since 2020.

I gave 4/10. Rather poor first 10 days and pretty dire last 9 days.

But decent from the 11th-21st.

A September version of July 2021, but wetter.

The synoptics were interesting at times but there was just too much dull and wet weather to give it a higher rating. The sun barely shone from the 22nd until the end of the month, a dull spell which is still ongoing.

If the thundery spell of the 20th-22nd had then been followed by a renewed anticyclonic spell in the final week, as the models were showing at one point, it would have been much better, at least 6/10. And if the first week's fine spell had occurred, followed by the N-ly, then the mid-month fine spell, then the thundery spell of the 20th-22nd, then the final week anticyclonic - it would have been 8 or even 9/10.

Be interesting if we did this every month for 2024 so far. I think most on here found June pretty decent so that might have scored the highest so far. Maybe August as well but probably was a bit too warm for some.

5/10 from me. Nothing too great, nothing terrible. I did like the cold spells and it was nice to get a September that wasn't just August II for a change, but there was honestly far too much rain for this early in the season. Here the amount was acceptable, but I really feel for central England, especially when we have another big storm or two on the way... The second half of October and November will now have to be dry to make up for how much rain we will have had in September to mid October, otherwise by November we will have record levels of flooding.

CryoraptorA303 Interesting I've seen a number of indications of a drier second half of October on here today, which would be very, very atypical - the final 10 days almost always being wet and often windy, and when that isn't the case the whole month is usually dry.

But I guess, rarely, we can get a month which is the reverse of the norm. 1993 is the classic example - the first two weeks were silly wet and then it barely rained at all in the second half.

Thought it was OK. Much preferable to last yr  imo as at least it felt much more seasonal . I know many would have liked a more summer like September considering the summer wasnt great but summer had its chance and I like the weather to be more in the way of seasonal for the time of Yr.

Metwatch I can imagine if we ranked every year since Netweather became a thing, 2024 would come out pretty low on the list.
