Is there any likelihood of thunder snow within this next low pressure system for Saturday/Sunday?

Already looking forward to the first frequent lightning over the Channel this upcoming season! I'm predicting the 1st 'big'/elevated storm for Sussex will be May 8th. You heard it from me.

Elevated thunderstorms are virtually a guarantee every year during warm and humid weather, that's one thing our (naff) climate and proximity to France excels at! (at least down here in Sussex...)

Unlike proper deep cold, snow and winter storms which are as rare as gold teeth in three-headed hens on Mars.

I adore the winter and prefer it over the summer in general, but man is the convective season EASY in comparison!

We virtually always have a handful of enjoyable storms to look back on by October 1st, which can sometimes even outweigh and somewhat moderate the slog of yucky heat and humidity during particularly active years. 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2024... See how many memorable ones there are?

Back to winter- Last proper one... errrr... 2010?? 2018 doesn't count as a whole because as great as that was, it was a lone spell at the very end of winter going into spring. Sometimes winter can be so dull (13c and drizzle woohoo!) that I forget weather even exists!

Must try harder winter!

Okay, a big change overnight as all three main models bring that one over NI.

If it can trend even further south that'd be great! Gagging for some exciting weather after one of the most boring autumn/winters ever so far.

Ah this thread, how I miss it. Hopefully by March/April we can start to look forward to some convective activity. We are overdue some proper April shower thunderstorms (PM westerlies over increasing insolation!) A setup like this one coming next week would have been good for 3 months time!

Some weak convection to the north currently, possibly the weak showers around Nottingham area.

Thursday 23rd January - Convective Outlook:

An active front will bring the risk of isolated lightning across parts of Ireland, Wales & S England alongside the risk of 50+mph gusts & an isolated short lived tornado / Funnel.

ESTOFEX going for a Level 2 over southern England

"A level 2 was issued for S UK mainly for severe wind gusts with a few tornado events possible. A strong event cannot be ruled out."

"DISCUSSION

... S UK ...

An active cold front passage is forecast during the daytime hours, placed beneath the left exit of an intense mid/upper jet (e.g. up to 45 m/s at 700 hPa). The accompanied upper trough is filled with IPV rich air, so combined with strong QG lift we expect modest instability build-up in an extreme shear environment. Forecast hodographs are rather straight, but offer abundant LL shear with lots of LL streamwise vorticity, so rotating updrafts are possible, including a risk of a few tornados and severe gusts. Given rapid translation of thunderstorms, any tornado could be long-tracked and even a strong event cannot be ruled out. The main tornado risk seems to evolve along and S of a Bristol-London line, where the highest BL moisture resides in a low LCL environment. Limited LL CAPE could confine the overall risk more to the coastal areas (up to 200 J/kg), but not much modification is needed for some better LLCAPE build-up further N.
Convection my race E towards the coastal areas of W Belgium/SW Netherlands with an ongoing severe gust risk."

LightningLover shame that GFS is the only one that has this further west! Been too long since a proper storm hit the south coast
