No doubt the storm shield will weaken any other storms coming up here.

Just following from my previous message and the post from @WeatherArc, I have drawn over some of the radar images to show what I mean with regards to mesocyclones/hook echoes and outflow dominant cells.

The first image shows that these cells are in a very strongly sheared environment. You can see how the precipitation is vented well to the NE of the cell updraft.

The next image is showing a possible brief mesocyclone with a hook echo as I previously message. You can see the hook-like feature on radar.

Then 10 minutes later, you can see how the hook disappears and instead curves the other way in more of an 'S' shape. This is the point at which the mesocyclone has weakened and the outflow begins to surge out from the storm.

The more I read and see on here the more I wish I had stopped and taken a photo of the stunning anvils approaching this area around 09-10.00!

At last, a big bright pink flash and a window rattler of a boom of thunder around 10 mins ago. 

Genuinely the first lightning I've experienced since August 2023 in Arizona. 2025 has already outdone 2024 in that regard!

I'm pretty sure I saw a flash out the frosted bathroom window this morning about 6am. Was pretty windy, rainy. Might have been a distant storm perhaps?

Structure on radar of that Thetford cell looks pretty damn nice..

 CoventryWeather That cell at Thetford turned everything white within a minute with hail at Royston Herts at 12:05pm

 Windblade I thought I saw very distant lightning on the western horizon around 6.30am from the spare bedroom window.

Just had a rumble here.

Hail now too.  Always a good sign of a potential storm.

And just as I typed that a massive flash and LOUD thunder almost immediately. Must be right ontop of me.

I must admit I didn't expect anything today. I thought the action was gonna be more to the southwest so I'm pleasantly surprised. Hail has turned to rain now and electrical activity seems to have petered out but nonetheless a good start to the year. I hope it's not another false dawn like last year which was possibly the worst year for storms for me I've ever had!

 Flash bang flash bang etc I didn;t get a storm. I got one rumble out one hail hsower. Then 2 rumbles out another little shower later. Boring!
