March 2023 overwall wasn't a cold month with a CET of 7.1C. However there were some decent snowfalls especially for central and northern areas in the first half, though not on the levels of March 2018. Maximum snow depth of the month was 32 cm at Buxton on the 10th, and around 30cm in the higher parts of Sheffield.

Pretty solid looking charts for cold and snow lovers with a highly -ve NAO, though soon becoming west based with Euro heights building in. In turn, low pressure systems quickly attemped to introduce milder air, which brought snow for the south but quickly turned back to rain there. For the Midlands northward, precipitation remained as snow, and for some continued to pile up for 2 days!

Depths in Sheffield looking comparable to a photo from December 2010! Up to 30cm fell there which is one of the deepest recorded in that area during meteorological spring.

7cm total on the shed roof in the garden here. However the snow often melted a little during the day before settling through the night and morning repeatedly:

A very quick melt rate here on the 10th due to the strengthening early spring sunshine:

Uppermill, Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, 11th March 2023.

Saddleworth area had around 10-15cm locally, 20-30cm+ on hills.

We had about 5 inches I think overnight 9/10th after a day of heavy wet snow showers. There was a rapid thaw in the warming March sun. Further heavy snow showers fell on the 14th. A decent snowy spell, with the fells receiving copious amounts.

the snowfall thawed quick for us too.. we had a big dump on the Thursday. There was a lot of sun thaw on Friday which if i recall correctly was a bright sunny day but temperatures barely above freezing.

The pictures were on the Saturday, which until the afternoon was dry and sunny again freezing, a band of precipitation then came through but it was snow to rain, and after that the snow just thawed from rain and rising temps back into the mid single digits.

As much as I understand some people aren't as fond as having snowfall this late due to how quick things can thaw in the sun, I actually don't mind it as much -

There's no better feeling than going on a nice walk and finding a nice pub in deep snowfall at that time of year with the sun out. You can feel the sun, just, and it doesn't even melt on all surfaces - plenty remains on different surfaces and on hillsides etc. Makes it look pretty even if it thins out.

The snow turned to rain Thursday afternoon with a gradual thaw.  However, had more snow in the early hours of Friday which gave way to a sunny day and a slow thaw in the sun.  Photos from Friday morning.

These photos were taken in the Shropshire hills on Saturday.  By the time I had got home, it was raining with a thaw underway.
