There seems to be a Boeing 737 (Cancún to Monterrey) flying right through the storm. Surely some kind of error?

AderynCoch Amazingly it doesnt look like an error. Maybe they're deliberately trying to add a bit of shear to weaken the updrafts!

Updated surge is catastrophic. We are talking about 15 feet of water going into a major metropolitan area with a population of 3.1 Million.

MacDill Air Force Base will be completely underwater. With the possibility that Tampa International Airport will also be underwater in this scenario

And Miltons eyewall is still contracting, this is absolutely staggering.

Jesus. This actually looks similar with what super typhoon Haiyans main core looked like. A full closed off doughnut with sub -80 tops. Mental.

Back on radar and i bet about to collect some of the most intense data ever collected from a Hurricane.

This satellite loop is one for the history books.

goes16_ir_14L_202410072107.thumb.gif.9c19dfc0da6fd084baf5ff4389d6ebfc.gifgoes16_vis_14L_202410072107.thumb.gif.45c4e9e89c4d9dae055014f3ea4422a1.gif

Look at that pinhole eye with a hot ring of CDO well into the mid -80c even pushing -90c. There is no other words to describe this hurricane than incredibly violent.

Also note the intense gravity waves and pronounced stadium effect on the second loop

Strongest hurricane ever recorded? Could the central air pressure have dropped below 882?

CryoraptorA303 Probably not yet, but will likely intensify further overnight and some models predict it may have an ERC tomorrow then have another go at intensifying further tomorrow evening to close to the record

They should have livestreamed the view from the hunter cockpit. That would have been awesome to watch.

The last 15 foot storm surge to hit this coast was 176 years ago.  But back then Tampa was a village of 200 people..

But reading that article, that storm reshaped the coastline/keys significantly.

CryoraptorA303 agreed. With the increased water temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico, cat 1 storms just keep getting super charged and before you know it they have intensified into a cat 5.

Just noticed maximum wind gusts where reaching 220mph a short while ago.  Absolutely incredible. That was with sustained winds of 180mph. I suspect these figures may be just a nudge higher when the next update comes in shortly, which is unbelievable. Regardless if it does, Milton is an absolute powerhouse hurricane 🌀..
