Time for the annual minimum temp watch thread for the new season. I've started it earlier than usual, given we have had a number of cold mins early this season, and tonight looks a cold one, probably recording lowest min of season so far.

Please someone post the current lowest min recorded this Autumn, and also the England and Wales and Scottish low of last year for comparison.

Use this thread to record your lowest min of season so far, a watch on lowest min for Scotland and England and Wales so far.. and your guesses on lowest min for Scotland and England/Wales where and when.

My thoughts, Altnaharra -18 degrees, some point second half of January.

England Shap, -16 degrees either mid December or late Jan, have a feeling December will produce some preety cold weather.

Wales Sennybridge - 17.9

December 2024:

England: -9.3.C (14th) Emley Moor

Wales: -7.4.C (29th) Sennybridge

Scotland: -12.8.C (15th) Dalwhinnie

January 2025

England: -15.6.C (20th) Morpeth

Wales: -10.4.C (20th) Sennybridge

Scotland: -24.2.C (22nd) Aviemore

February 2025

England: -6.7.C (10th) Oxford

Wales: -7.0.C (2nd) Trawsgoed

Scotland: -8.3.C (8th) Braemar

I have a feeling Scotland and the far north of England is going to have an exceptionally cold and snowy January next year probably even worse than 2010. However I don’t think winter 2024/25 overall will be a cold one expect in the north. I think there will be brief wintry spells in every month but overall it’ll be a rather mild and settled winter

The coldest temperature I've observed so far this autumn was -5c around Kenethmont Aberdeenshire couple of weeks back. A reminder that parts of Scotland can still get very cold.

9th Feb 2021

Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Resurrecting this thread, very little activity so far, not surprising given how mild nights have been.

However,  chillier period is on the cards and rolling minimum temp watch is needed.

As asked please can someone post the current England and Scotland mins of the season since September.

These temps should easily be challenged next week.

Topcliffe was -2 early this morning.

Much colder than predicted this evening around here. It's already sub zero in Yorkshire and the Peak District so could be a new low for the season in England tonight. Thixendale -1.0C and probably too high to get held back by fog if cloud stays away?

Overnight Sunday should bring the coldest temperatures of the season so far.

BBC mentioned a possible -8 early hours for somewhere in Scotland. England should see a few lowest minimas this week. Indeed many will if not already record their first air frost.

Keep the absolute minima recordings coming.

There are a few around -6C in England so Shap might get beaten. Scotland has -7.2C at Tulloch Bridge.

Tulloch Bridge -7.8C overnight.

The western side of the Highlands had the lightest winds. On the eastern side the wind wasn't quite light enough for temps to drop as low. Overnight Friday I think the eastern side of the Highlands will break -7.8C with Braemar looking the favourite.

I think tonight could run -7.8C close across the usual cold spots in the Highlands.

TonyH worded it wrong apologies. I meant this is the earliest in November I’ve recorded a minima this low since 2019 Definitely had much lower in December as well. I do live in a very frost prone area as well. Potentially colder tonight I think!
