The lack of posts in this thread says it all. Here we have yet to record an air frost this December, with the lowest min being 0.8C this morning.

The models suggest it'll be touch and go whether we record one in the next 11 days. If we don't, it'll be the first time since December 1988. Even the dreadful December 2015 managed it!

Time to ressurect this thread, under any deep snow cover we may see some new mins over the coming week.

Shap was -7 this morning, already on -6.1 degree tonight.

Those who have yet to record an air frost should do so by this time next week.

Aleman Gosh -20 degrees would be lowest since Feb 21 I think in the UK? Stats for lowest mins this decade anyone i.e. 2020 onwards, England, Wales and Scotland.

Aleman Carol Kirkwood is suggesting as low as -17°C in northern England.

Would be good to see the minimum temperature being the coldest since 2010.

Aleman Knowing these forecasts, could come a bit below that. With snow cover and clear skies could see some notable temps. I'm forecasted -7C Thursday night, could well easily be -8/9C.

Coldie24  But Braemar recorded -23.0°C in February 2021 which was the coldest temperature recorded in the UK since 1995.

Coldie24 I presume you mean for England? For Scotland February 2021 beat December 2010 (-23.0°C in Braemar versus -21.3°C in Altnaharra).

Edit: I see @Sawel beat me to it!

damianslaw doubt it will be in the usual frost hollow stations in the Vale of York like Topcliffe as I don't think there's any snow there.

cheese There is still a couple of inches of snow left on the fields and back roads around here. -4.6C was recorded last night so I wouldn't be too surprised to see a minus double digits figure in the coming nights.

Shap looks the favourite to record the lowest in N England. Not only Friday morning but Thursday morning too. Friday morning should be the coldest there though.

The manual Met-Office site in Bewcastle in Cumbria should do good too - it's a good 130 metres lower than Shap so will be interesting to see how things go.

Across the border and from the Met-Office sites, Braemar, Loch Glascarnoch, Altnaharra and Kinbrace have the lowest forecast temperatures.

I really can't wait until the manual Met-Office site in Tomintoul is up and running. I posted about this on the Scotland Regional area. I am the one who initiated this back in October 2023 and everything has been signed off between the land owner (a large corporation of the Scottish Government) and the Met-Office just before Christmas. I will be the one running it with a team of Volunteers. I don't have any affiliation with the Met-Office, I run their manual climate site in Tealing (Angus) as a volunteer.

I'll post the lowest minimum readings on here during cold spells for all to see. 🫡

Braemar might do OK but doesn't have particularly deep snow cover at the moment  (relatively speaking) compared to other parts of inland Aberdeenshire/Northern Scotland.

Higher parts of Donside like Corgarff/Strathdon etc certainly look primed to go properly cold with a deep cover of fresh powder - sadly no official sites but the amateur ones are always interesting and often significantly colder than Braemar.

Interesting to hear about the new site in Tomintoul? The village itself  doesn't strike me as a particularly severe frost prone location but I guess if it's anywhere down near the river!

Edit - thank you for volunteering BTW! There's a definite shortage of official sites in Aberdeenshire/Moray so it will really help!

Snowandrocks Yes, the village itself is up on a height. The land from the village on both sides slopes down to the River Avon on one side and the Conglass Water on the other.

The site isn't far from the Conglass Water with a nice area of flat ground. A lot of the ground near the river is protected for birds and under Wetland and Environmental Schemes so quite lucky to get a good area!
