Tbh thought we were in with a shot of -20°C. What prevented temperatures dropping further?

Guess conditions in Shap were suboptimal last night for England's lowest.

currents Indeed, 2021 was quite remarkable.
That was the coldest February night since 1955!

Last night was our coldest January night since 2010!

So, with another month and a half of Meteorological Winter remaining. Will we go lower than our current leading minimum temperature of -18.7? ☃️ ❄️ 🥶

The two factors that impede severe cold temperatures are cloud cover and wind.

I’ve found a personal weather station in the Cairngorms that got down to -19.9c. If you look at the ones nearby, they are all around -18c currently too.

Across the Weald of Kent it’s sitting about -5c in a lot of places, not bad for us in the SE.

currents ...in which case the BBC got it wrong... unless it covers only official weather stations?:

BBC News - UK weather: Lowest temperature of -18C in Altnaharra on winter's coldest night - BBC News

Altnaharra in the Highlands recorded the lowest overnight temperature of the winter in Scotland.

Shaunado That article says it was the coldest January night since 2010 which is correct. Your previous post said "I believe that's the coldest temperature the UK has experienced since 2010" which is incorrect because as @currents said, in Feb 21, Braemar recorded -23.0°C.

FWIW...

Altnaharra's -18.9°C this morning was not the coldest temperature there since 2010. That temperature was beaten in Feb 2021 when -19.9°C was recorded at the site. This was the same date where Braemar recorded -23.0°C and (as I mentioned in a previous post), two other sites dropped below -20.0°C. The top 4 coldest temperatures during that spell...

Braemar -23.0°C

Kinbrace -21.3°C

Balmoral -20.9°C

Altnaharra -19.9°C

PS - The -18.9°C at Altnaharra is the 5th coldest temperature in the UK since 2010.

Sawel Yes - -18.9 at Altnaharra now confirmed as the lowest temperature overnight.
Also, check out the lowest maximum stat from yesterday.

Sawel Fair point, I skim-read it, and stand corrected. Thanks for the added stats, some remarkable temperatures. 🥶

lottiekent Not that impressive really for Kent as in  January 1987 it was probably colder than -5 deg maximum on a few days and not forgetting in 1947 when Elmstone recorded -21.1 deg.

hillbilly March 2018 must've had some pretty low temperatures in Kent. Anyone know what the lowest was?

Wonder if this thread will die of death for the rest of the season as has been the case past 3 years, with February offering a paucity of cold.. we shall see. -18.9 the figure to beat, a tall order but as we saw in Feb 21 we recorded a low of -23.

hillbilly I feel like Kent doesn’t get that cold often anymore though since mid-winter easterlies are a rarity now.
