bluearmy my biggest takeaway from these pictures is you need a bit more shooting practice in that goal Nick

Oh god my toes haven’t been that cold on the school run. Wet trainers from the 1st minute.

Surprised it’s been this heavy as we are only 100m ASL. Training in Luton tonight might be awkward as it’s always worse up on hill

The Met Office have nailed it to be fair, remember warnings are about disruptive snow, I'm my area which was in the warning zone it was disruptive as after dark the temperature dropped below freezing and stuck on the roads... Down south today yes it'll snow but it won't stick on roads as it's been too warm

 badgerhud not sure about that

heaviest cover is furthetst south in their warnings area and it took them too long to bring central midlands into the equation.
I’ve seen reports of 5cm + in Oxfordshire/ bucks/northants

I agree with your basic message that they have to judge where lying snow/ice will be impactful rather than just pretty.

Snow shower here in Wantage. Pretty much on the southern snow/rain transition, but the cold air is back in now, so a good chance any further precipitation will be snow.

The models showing snow as far south as part of the world were right on the money.

Oddly, one thing I’ve noticed is that inaccuracy of the radar, the pink snow line hasn’t moved further east than Milton Keynes/Luton this morning, yet it’s been properly snowing much further east.  It’s normally quite accurate, IME

Morning all 🙂

Was in rural Derbyshire yesterday morning (Ambergate, north of Belper) and decided to head back to London 48 hours early - glad I did as the neighbour up there has sent me pictures of the snow covered scene. Ambergate is alongside the Derwent so hardly high ground - I can only imagine how much snow has fallen at Matlock, let alone Buxton.

Down here in East Ham, a mix of rain and snow to start the day - snow settling on cold surfaces but not on the grass.  It was more snow than rain an hour ago but now more rain than snow. Nonetheless, it counts as a snow event, albeit transient and probably the earliest I've experienced in 20 years of living in this part of London.

Little or no actual disruption here in truth - not sure my side road on the hill in Derbyshire would be much fun this morning.

bobbyCov but is it really disruptive? It'll be slushy under for after falling on warm ground.

Ours was after dark last night and the temperature fell comfortably below zero so they was a genuine ice issue

What radar are you using for snow/rain?

The weather channel app has a global radar with precipitation type, this is what it has right now. Correct for here as it has been snowing. I wonder if places like Cambridge and Colchester are still in the rain though as it shows…

snowking The good thing about that Dec 22 cold spell was we had had a number of cold days prior with sharp frosts to set the ground...i was so excited that evening watching the snow encroach from the east...then it lasted for a week or so...still nice to see some flakes in November...hope it wont be the last...🙄

That December 2022 snowfall was one of the best here in years. The entire day was freezing cold and frosty, so the ground was primed. Every flake settled, had 6 inches which lay lying thick on the ground for a week. At Christmas time too, so very festive. Snow fell on the 12th and was still there on the 18th. All melted by the 19th though.

Could I see some snow in around an hour? Pink stuff approaching on the radar. Will it stay intensified is the question

I used to find radar was spot on for years for snow at my location in the Vale of York but something changed.  From winter 22/23 onwards, indicated sleet was almost always snow  (never had much depth just lots of dustings) and rain was sometimes snow as well, so radar now seems to persistently underrepresent wintery weather. I'm wondering what changed and why they don't just change it back. I had thought it was maybe just my area but numerous reports here seem to suggest it is the same elsewhere.

danm just the one on the NW homepage.   I’ve always used it, but my location was well into the blue section all morning, but it was heavy snow fall at 7am.
