Not really a fan of the outlook and especially the upcoming pattern with the Euro low from this weekend.

Looks like the mid-Atlantic ridge will over amplify and continue a chilly northerly - northeasterly feed with that euro low into next week. However the airmass wouldn't be cold enough for much in the way of low level snowfall, and instead most likely just cold rain showers with a warmer north Sea modifying the airmass (early January 2021 style). Yuk.

At this point I would rather what I had on Sunday; 13-14C and still sunny if there's no snow. At least after the next few days It may not be as wet which is the only positive I see into next week. A northerly tracking jetstream but it staying mild and dry here is what i'd prefer now.

January is worse than December by a mile. I might be a bit biased because December has my birthday, but January is usually darker because its the coldest and most overcast month

At least with January we're getting a little closer to the warmer and brighter days of spring compared to December, that makes it a little better for me and closer to something I look forward to.

It's a shame we switched from the Julian calendar to Gregorian calendar the way we did as we're two weeks behind what we would've been. Christmas would be in modern day early January (and way more likely to be white) and that middle of January period would be like late January with evenings getting lighter.  The shortest day would've been around the 7th December so you're getting that really dark period over and done with by Christmas.

Easter then will be deeper into Spring with better chance of better weather.

I know it would be impractical to skip a calendar fortnight but I'd love it if we did!

 Summer8906 My ratings

September 2024 : 5/10 - This is a case where the month "felt better than it seems". Poor-ish first third (Aside from the warm and sunny day on the 6th), Spring-like middle third ("April Showers" to 6 or 7 days of warm sunshine followed by the best Thunderstorm since July 2013), and a mostly dire last third.  Perhaps like a September version of April/May 2024

October : 5/10 - Nowhere near as bad here as it seems in the far South. It was more Anticyclonic gloom that was the problem than constant rain, and it was the first drier than average October here in 6 years, if somewhat dull. There were still many pleasant days throughout the month

November : 7/10 - Quite a varied month, almost spring-like in a way. Very dry first half, though the first 10 days were very dull and gloomy (I actually started to enjoy the atmospheric gloom by then), then a sunny period with average temperatures followed by the best November snowfall since 2010, then went straight into the mid to high teens on the 24th, ending with a cold and sunny final week. Sunshine was average here despite a very dull start, and it was dry with average temperatures

First half of January is tough going, a time to hibernate, when the weather plays ball with cold and sun think 2010, it takes the edge off the gloom, but typically its dull and wet, and spring is still a long way. The right time to visit warmer sunnier climes.

Still used today as a religious calendar in some churches

Amazed at the number of people giving November a high rating 😂

The 2nd half was OK but that 1st half was so dreadful & dull, anything over a 4/10 overall seems obscene lol.

SunSean Yes, that dull, dank and mild spell during the first half of the month was dreadful!  However, the cold snap at the end of the third week did redeem the month somewhat, particularly as I wasn't expecting it and even more so the amount of snow I got from it!  Appreciate that wasn't the case for many though.

SunSean Don't think I saw the sun at all for the first two weeks. There was at least a fortnight of unbroken anticyclonic gloom that began at the end of October.

This wasn't just a case of 'mostly grey / dull November weather' as per usual. It was quite literally an all-enveloping shroud of darkness. Not a single ray of light penetrated through for 14 days or so.

Second half of the month was a lot better but there's no compensating that Mordor-tier first half.

A couple of rumblings about a potential SSW in the model thread.

I sincerely hope not.

What I’m confused with though and what the long range forecast won’t really explain is how mild things will get like should we expect a December 2015 style January or something like January 2004 someone feel free to explain haha 😂.

I absolutely cannot wait to get this stressful month over with, I can't wait for January when work calms down and I can actually relax a little.

Azazel Happens every single year now to make sure we don't get any Spring sunshine so I'd be more surprised if it didn't happen. Yet people will still cheer it on knowing full well all it gives us is a mild, dull and wet Spring.

@Azazel @SunSean if an SSW happens early in winter it shouldn’t affect Spring like those we’ve had in the last few years.

Might be a path to some proper winter, in winter, then ‘hopefully’ more favourable conditions in Spring.

SunSean My SAD has kicked in early, I usually don’t suffer much with it until after Christmas. This last week I’ve felt very meh. But putting up my tree, some decorations and outside lights has helped. Plus today it’s actually beautifully sunny! Woohoo 🙌

I can't find a pattern between the 2006-2010 SSWs and spring rainfall/sunshine/temperature. Anyone who believes that SSWs ruin springs can check out the met office climate summaries for themselves. Wikipedia has a list of SSW events. They do mostly happen in mid to late winter, very few in late autumn.
