Clear, sunny and cold here with a temp of just 4.5C after an early ground frost.

One of those rare cold and sunny inversion days under high pressure that are so hard to come by. The mild south-westerly grot can stay away as it means only one thing - cloud.

*Stormforce~beka* Didn't even have that here yesterday, not 4 hours, not 4 minutes, nor 4 seconds. Grey throughout. Everything feels as it should be.

Azazel That is great to read. And don't forget you're into the second half of winter now, meteorologically, and it flies along from here, spring before you know it.

Snow Squall Watch in effect for:

City of Edmonton - St. Albert - Sherwood Park

A narrow band of snow squalls is expected to develop this morning, producing brief but intense snowfall, poor visibility and gusty winds to 100 km/h. Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common. Travel may be hazardous due to sudden changes in the weather. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to *****@*****.tld or tweet reports using #ABStorm.

Another sunny day. Keep ‘em coming.

The high today was 8C and the low was -1C. A decent diurnal range for mid January.

I notice Altnaharra had a low of 10C today (according to WeatherOnline), the highest in the UK alongside the Scilly Isles. Such a bizarre temperature distribution today!

Let's hope if the rest of the winter does turn out with Atlantic naffness running the show, we can at least keep sunshine levels high and rain to a minimum.

A jet shoved north with higher pressure over the south but some fresh air in circulation would help bring sunny days by Feb.

So February is fast approaching and with it the end of the meteorological winter, it’s been yet another non event (IMBY) apart a week of frost recently, winter for the majority in the UK is just an extension of autumn, it’s a truly horrible climate.

I know there’s time for surprises but once we’re in February, winter can ‘do one’, bring on the warmth & increased day length instead, too many disappointments have done this ‘coldie’ in!

MP-R True zonallty tends to bring decent sunshine levels even if pressure is low as it being frontal rather than cyclonic means you get frontal clearances and air isn’t stagnating strong westerlies say no to stagnant cloud. Feb 2020 www actually decent for sunshine for example. I’d take zonallty over a grotty west based NAO-

Arch Stanton We've only just passed half way. Its a bit early to be calling it yet. There's a long time to go yet before warmth is a factor. Its similar to calling summer off on 16th July and hoping for frosts!

I'm not going to disagree it has been poor so far. January has at least been cold and sunny with no storms but December was dire. I wouldnt write off anything yet though.

I get what your saying and yes, we’re midway through January, fair point!

However, after reading some of the more sensible posts on the MAD thread yesterday, (realists) like Nick F don’t hold much hope for the rest of January, I’d wager he’s right compared to the FI 14 day models some people were referencing / dreaming about.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved winters and the prospect of snow but we simply don’t get winters in the UK, we have one long autumn that starts in October and something that resembles a mix of spring / summer for 3-4mths, it’s so depressing. Widespread snowfalls like 47, 63, 79, 82, 87 and 10 are becoming rare events, more so now with SSTs being +2/3c above LTAs.

Cracking morning and afternoon above the fog in the Malverns today! Cleared around midday but then came back again by 2pm, feeling much warmer above it than in it. By sunset, 2 hours after I left the highest point was covered in the low cloud. So some rather variable and breezy conditions up there with the fog behaving sporadically. Felt like a different planet going back home with all the low cloud and grey skies after being in the sun all day.

Agree with some others that the last few days have had an unusually spring-like feel to them. Cold and frosty mornings breaking to sunny days is something I associate more with March than January. Even the strength of the sun feels quite high for mid-January.

Definitely nothing Spring-like down in the South East the last few days. In fact, we've recently began one of those disgusting & frequently occuring runs of zero sunshine that lasts weeks. I'm not expecting to see the sun again til mid February lol.

As long as we don't enter a period of endless rain, and wind, then I'll be happy. I'm ready for a reasonable Spring, and a decent Summer to be honest.

More interesting output this morning than I'd expected. Maybe it won't go as Pits Up after all.

SunSean  Yeah I was definitely too optimistic with placing any faith whatsoever of that forecasted spell of mostly sunny days upcoming 😆

Fully downgraded to cloud, fog, and now next week rain, in a matter of 24-48 hours haha. Standard.

Even worse, the cold temps predicted are still remaining - so we're looking at some days of 2 / 3c max but cloudy and foggy, which - at least to me - feel colder than the sunny, frosty, clear days like we had last week. I suppose because of the humidity - the moisture in the air becomes a super chill and seems to seep into everything.

In Absence of True Seasons Yeah gonna be horrible down here in the South east. Cold and sunny is lovely but cold and overcast/damp? Disgusting. Maybe we need to move up to Lowestoft, the North East or Yorkshire, seems to be sunny most of the time up in those places these days lol.
