4th day in a row and counting of zero sunshine down here.

Doesn't matter what season it is, or whether we've had sunny days previously, getting constant runs of no sunshine whatsoever is sickening, depressing and a complete waste. It's becoming more and more common too lately, especially down here.

We're talking not even an hour of sun or even 30 mins but zero. Day in day out. Just honestly go away.

*Stormforce~beka* yes, similar up here today.  The cold days are probably numbered though.  However, this time next week the mighty Atlantic will likely be at our doors.  ‘I’ll huff and I’ll puff!! 🌊🌪️😤🫣

Don  Am not a fan of Atlantic winter weather usually, but it might actually bring some interesting weather and some sunshine, at least. I’d take anything at this point, rather than this endless grey boredom

DTHFCJ we've had a couple of cloudy, windy days here in Fuert. Temp today has just reached 20c, but there's a cool north westerly blowing and only seen glimpses of the sun this afters.

Whereas the Western canaries, i.e. Tenerife and Gran Canaria have been sunny today.

Still, cant complain, as our 10 days so far, have had 8 sunny days and temps around 22/23c, so decent enough for January, down here.

I think the most impressive thing with today is how the temperatures have managed to fall through the night despite continous low cloud. Down to just below 1C this morning and it's stayed around that all afternoon, strong inversion, the air aloft is still quite warm.

Very grim and looks it will be dull for quite a few days, the fall off for this January had definitely started!

Metwatch During the summer of 1970 I'd started work at the Main Met Office Gloucester.   I had to wait a few weeks before the next initial training course was due, so was at a bit of a loose end.   It was suggested to me that I analyse the average coldest and warmest dates  of the year  (have forgotten the warmest but the coldest was 6th Jan, mum's birthday.  Whilst researching I came across a period when the temperature at Gloucester (Eastern Avenue) fell for 53 consecutive hours, day and night, as a cold easterly slowly but steadily took hold.   I wonder if there are any official records of such instances?  I reckon Gloucester records would have started WW2 as we were next to what had been a main briefing room, where WRAFs moved things about on vast maps.

Last year we had been stuck in a rut of wet and dull weather from mid-October 2023 to May 2024, and this year we have been stuck in a rut of "Anticyclonic Gloom" ironically also since mid-October. My guess is that Feb and March will be dry with also lots of Anticyclonic Gloom but perhaps sunnier come the March equinox. I wonder if next October-March will be stuck in a rut of dry and sunny weather

I have actually started to like Anticyclonic Gloom now anyways (Feels more atmospheric then mild, wet and dull) hence I would rate November 2024 and this January around a 7/10

Well, you know my preferred weather type at this time of year!  However, I agree that a Atlantic dominated pattern has the potential to bring a little interest, although like I said in a previous post, not weeks on end of it!  There are signs of high pressure building from the south according to the Metoffice towards the middle of February.  They mention an increasing risk of frost and fog but I would have thought frost would be limited, due to it being a 'mild' high?  As for this current gloom, although it's dull and uninteresting, at least you can get out and about without getting soaked and/or blown away!

Impressive inversion over Slovakia today. -2C in Bratislava, over 10C in the ski resort of Štrbské Pleso (elevation 1300m).

The Little Carpathians were in fine form. I managed to get above the inversion at about 600m.

baddie if this repeating anticyclonic pattern continues throughout 2025 then it could be a pretty decent year

Don't like this borderline cold and dull weather at all. Usually cold weather in winter correlates with frost, sunshine, and snow, but when it delivers neither of these things then it might as well be mild, which would at least make it more comfortable outdoors and save people on their heating bills.

Snowshine I know what you mean, but at least being cold makes it at least feel seasonal.

raz.org.rain The first 9 months of 2024 had no strong anticyclone lasting longer than a week, though much of summer was decent, but then there was a 3 week anticyclone from late-October to mid-November (Though 2 weeks of it was very dull and only turning sunnier from the 11th-14th) then two anticyclonic periods in December (Though both dull) and now roughly two weeks from Jan 8th (Again, dull after a sunny start to the period). If these patterns happened in Spring/Summer then it could be long periods of sunshine. Im just hoping that we havent used up all the HP for another year during these periods, and end up with a rotten March-October period with very little settled weather

Don Yes, some Atlantic patterns are preferable to others. Constant howling wind and rain/drizzle would also be a pain. Wouldn’t mind as much if we get some decent convection interspersed with sunnier periods. A cold high with sunshine by day and fog and frost by night would be fine. Plenty of winter to go still, so we can’t rule anything out - including snow ❄️

baddie  given the amount of rain we had in 2023/24 we're probably overdue a long dry spell at some point so some high pressure now is irrelevant still got a long way before we can balance the books against all the rain we had in 2023/24

SunSean been the opposite up here, plenty of sunshine this week - and this month. Leeming in North Yorkshire has recorded ~53 hours of sun so far this month - the average for all January there is 58 hours, so running well above average.

After another gloomy day yesterday looks like more of the same this morning. After a couple of decent days during the working week looks like sunshine could be limited for much of the next week. Why’s it so hard to get a sunny high!

Alderc 2.0 So agree. So much more can be done if it was sunny and bright. Lifts the mood no end. I would be in my greenhouse nice and warm getting going with growing stuff.
